Shadow Mountain Wyoming - Tetons and Reality

Yes... I have been on top of Shadow Mountain in the Bridger Teton National Forest. N43 degrees 18.684 / W 110 degrees 27.539 6,687 feet elevation on July 24, 2008.

Somehow the description of MY experience and those that followed an old post of Shadow Mountain some years ago on the Forum... seem to be different. I include some photographs that have not been previously posted on the Forums.

I was not wearing sun glasses, so that may be a possibility... the route was lined with trees going up/down. You will not see anyone until... they are idling in front of your tow vehicle wanting YOU... to move over into the brush/trees.

If someone can find my old post, please make a post and bring it forward.

If you manage to get to the area to Dry Camp... it is well worth the effort. There are some camping areas in the pine that usually are occupied by Horse Trailers for obvious reasons... horses like the shade.

The view is wonderdful. The area to camp is mostly grass and you will unlikely have to be concerned with neighbors.

To the South end is the 'local beer fire party spot'. Trash marks the spot...

This Dirt to Mud to Unmanaged Road is 1.5 lanes wide. Your trailer is over 1 lane wide. Tour Vans come from Jackson going UP and Down. Once you are on this road on the south side going UP or Down... get there FAST.

Follow someone when the opportunity presents itself... just a possible opportunity.

There is at least ONE pullout that YOU will have to back into so other coming UP figure YOU are in THEIR Way. Especially the Tour Vans. I do not recall a Second Pull Out.

Get there Early and leave Late is probably the BEST option. If you are met with traffic on this narrow rutted road... someone will have to move. It will not be pretty... We never went back, but if you... survive... you have BRAGGING RIGHTS TO HAVE DONE... Shadow Mountain!

Hi Ray,
Does your Aistream have a lift kit? Any problems with those ruts?

Cool trip! I’ve been up along Gros Ventre Wilderness road up to Soda Lake for the Solar Eclipse. At that time I had My overlanding Rig with me. Amazing time! Thanks for sharing. Click image for larger version

This was done with a 23 foot Safari with 14 inch Goodyear Marathons being towed by a 5.7L Tundra 4x4.

I did engage the 4x4 and wanted momentum as I began. The ruts were nothing unusual at that time and not a problem. It is a steep grade in the 7% to 9% range is my estimate.

Within the Boondocking Threads is the original discussion in 2007 or 2008. The source is still posting on the Forum. I just cannot recall the handle right now.

I would believe that any Airstream up to 30 feet and 4x4 can do it. A 34 foot... would be possible but better not lose traction. It is rather a straight 'shot' up, from what I recall.

The air is cool, being in the Sun is not a disadvantage.

There is a parking area at the base where I entered. Apparently there is a second entry to the north or east side. I never looked.

Let us know how you did. You are more prepared than we were for a first successful attempt.

Take Mooseson with you... he is ready and prepared to try... anything from seeing his post.
