We've got several of those kinds from Camping World here at the park. We haven't taken them on trips because they ARE bulky. Instead, we might consider something along the lines of the pit-2-go, albeit homemade.

Washer tub legs

I used plumbing flanges 3/4 " ,bolt to bottom of tub ,screw in 3/4 nipples to desired length [I used 12" nipples] be sure to add caps to keep from sinking in sand also set at a slight angle for more stability.and yes 3 legs is the way to go.

Here's one I just built. It has a copper tube with 1/8" holes drilled in it. I fill it with some water to cover the tube, so it does not overheat and melt the soldered connection. I may cut this down so the water is right at the top of the tank and the fire will dance on top of the water.
It was made from an old out of test 100# propane tank that I cut in half.

Got one at Camping World

Anyone using one of these from camping world? other ideas?

I saw the same at Camping World for about $100 and picked it up on a whim. We really like it and take it on just about every trip, even boondocking. Easy to set up, take down and takes about the same room as a small spare tire. Light too. Just enough space to put the standard 16" logs in. All in all a good investment that the wife likes too.

We also bought the "Pit to go" and love everything about it except... its heavy! My wife cant pull it out of the truck even though they show a nice lady in the add walking around with it all folded up. Its a really great concept and stores away nicely. Overall we are happy with it..

Jim;
Lou and I got our Fire Dancer at Cabellas, I believe. With freight and everything it was a little over $70. You might go on line to Sportsmansguide.com and see what they have. The have a wide variety of outdoors "stuff" but you have to be a member. They will gladly sign you up as a member if you purchase on line.
By the way, the lemoncello (spelling) is excellent that Lou made from your cookbook.

We have an older, bigger Coleman portable pit/grill and finally got a chance to use it last week. It worked great. If you're camping some place that doesn't allow regular camp fires the fire dancers are very cool.

So, I ordered it from Poole's - by the way, this is Rod's Christmas gift - well one of them. He never reads the posts here so it's cool. Now, did you ever get the glass chips for yours?

Bob - was that a while back? Cabellas has them for $129 plus shipping now.
Glad to hear that you and Lou are enjoying the cookbook. We've had a lot of fun with them. They're selling like crazy. I may need to order a second printing. She's been telling me about all the things she's been making for you both.
Sorry that you won't be at the New Years rally.

I think you got a good deal on the dancer. I bought mine almost 3 years ago and paid a little under $100. The prices have gone up a lot since then. You can leave it at home for New Years, bring wood.

but... since it's Rod's christmas gift he'll be disappointed if we don't bring it to the rally. Maybe we'll burn it for an hour or two then switch to wood.

Campfire in a can
For what its worth: We saw this one at the RV Show in Pomona, Ca www.campfireinacan.com. It is a little pricey on their website....can't remember what the show price was.....we didn't buy and don't know if it is worth it or not...they claim it is CSA Approved to 64,000 BTU on propane....pj

I saw that website yesterday afternoon. It looks pretty cool but I have a feeling that it's spiffier version of the Fire Dancer at a much higher cost.

My favorite time to use a Fire Dancer is in the early morning (with coffee). Many times we just don't want to build a wood fire in the morning - it takes tooo long, involves having to actually wake up and often we won't be at the camp site long enough to make it worth while. Turning on the fire dancer takes 3 seconds and no thought. Save the fire wood for evening.
