I got one of these several years ago. Pretty effective and keeps rain off as well.

Sound deadening for the generator is a fantastic idea. How much does that fabric container lower the sound level? Time to check the link. Pat

Edit - says performance is up to 9 db reduction ............ that would help some.

In addition to the sound absorbing panels in the pockets, I added some 3/16" Dynamat, which was left over from another project.

Sound deadening needs absorption and mass. Then, because it's an engine putting out fumes it needs to be somewhat cleanable.
Seriously, as little as leaning a piece of plywood against the generator makes a difference. Anything to block the sound waves.
However, you can't just have a box. Air has to get in and exhaust has to get out.
If I was going to build my own (I'll show a Honda 2000) first I'd make a box and line it with sound absorbing foam, like used to dampen boat engine compartments. I like how this guy added muffin fans for air flow and cooling.

Then I'd route the exhaust out of the box, maybe even make a turn.

I'll bet that would reduce noise by 80%.
Remember, you still have to add gas and pull the starter cord.

Noc cancellation or to forgo the silent hours

Is this ment for the noise reduction or to beat the silent hours.

Silent hours are there for a reason. Otherwise a very long extension cord and some muffler damper.

Happy travels

Now - beating the quiet hours - that is a consideration, which I had not thought to be an option.

If 50 db is the level of a normal conversation, one would believe that anything that was limited to a similar level would be acceptable. Or are "quiet hours" a requirement for limiting activity of any kind that would be noticeable?

And if the enclosure really would reduce noise by 10 db, a 59db generator would be reduced to that 50 db level. An interesting consideration.

What say ye? Possible? Appropriate? Pat

I think you'll find quiet hours are just that and music, loud talking, and, yes, generators would not be tolerated. I would never run a generator under any conditions outside the allowed hours. That's how they get banned altogether, like in Wisconsin.

I believe that quiet hours are for quiet, and generator hours are for "generators".

Most public campgrounds have certain hours when generators are allowed to run, sometimes only a couple of hours in the morning and a couple in the evening.

Trying to run your generator outside of when they are allowed, or during quiet hours, would be...in my opinion...inappropriate, and likely to incur the wrath of those around you.

There is not only sound from generators, but smell.

I'd put generators into the "necessary evils" category. No, I wouldn't violate quiet time, so also turn down your stereo, and stop practicing the trumpet too! Now about your German Shepard!

I always try to be a good neighbor, it's more than a generator hum that's disturbing those around you.

Sound in db is logarithmic, not linear.

"What happens when you halve the sound power? The log of 2 is 0.3, so the log of 1/2 is -0.3. So, if you halve the power, you reduce the power and the sound level by 3 dB. Halve it again (down to 1/4 of the original power) and you reduce the level by another 3 dB. If you keep on halving the power, you have these ratios." http://www.animations.physics.unsw.edu.au/jw/dB.htm

So 9db is actually quite a large reduction.

When I boondock there are NO quiet hours. Nobody around but my friends.
Boondocking is the "BOONIES" not in some campground. AEW

Boondocking and dry camping are two different things, but both utilize no hookups and potentially, generators.
