If you can find an 'old thread in Boondocking' about Greenhorn Boondocking there is a discussion. It may be back a few pages. Taylor Reservoir information...
Canadians managing to cross the Border through Montana's wild country 'access' will also find this place great until... Fall when the snow arrives, early or late. Great asphalt road to the lake, improved dirt on the east side for easy trailer traffic.
Very nice. To the east is Cottonwood Pass to Buena Vista and the Banana Belt between 14,000 foot peaks and the Front Range. Fishing Lake, River... Crested Butte is beautiful and lots of touristy kinds of things to do just west a bit.
Taylor Reservoir has wide open space for hundreds of RV's, even a Forest Service campground. Very few people are aware of this GEM as most go to snowmobile in the Winter.
For the Goosebump Trailer Towers... Monarch Pass at 11,312 feet at the top and make your ears POP on the way UP and... Down on Highway 50 to the West of Poncha Springs. You will find this Pass one of the more 'interesting' in southern Colorado...
This area is NOW on the potential maps of many following this Thread.
A great breakfast place right next to the Taylor Reservoir on the East Side is very good and even WE liked the food.
From Taylor Reservoir... you have a Base Camp to explore the 14ers, Durango/Silverton Steam Locomotive trip and... well... perfect for One Airstream or more.
Higher elevation so during the day it may be hot and dry, and after Sunset cool/cold and great for snoozing until sunrise.
I say and you could be living the Yaaaaa Hoooo of Colorado for a day or a week. Italian Mountain just north of the reservoir has a complete MINING Town to drive to. At tree line. Aspen is northwest of there but need 4x4 jeep or ATV to get there.
NO Reservations needed. It is wide open and you pick alongside the water, up in the trees around the NFS Campsite (fee area)... hundreds of acres of prime Off the Grid Camping with propane, food and maybe fuel as you drive into the area.
Did I miss anything? Sure. Watch them catch BIG trout at the Bridge....
