Former scout here, and cub leader too. I definitely still use skills today that I learned scouting. I was just thinking about my scouting Totin’ Chip award when I sharpened all our kitchen knives last weekend. I’m amazed at how many people I meet camping who really have no idea how to do very basic things, like build a fire.

Never made it to EAGLE; turned 16 and had to go to work. During my 4 years; did a number of hikes in full pack and some just hikes. Did earn several medals for hikes and made it to Philmont. Great experience; hike camp and cook. The difference, I sleep in an Airstream and not a tent but still build a fire .
I still wonder how many law suites were real or just someone looking for $$$$$$.

For all the problems that have come to light, we need organizations like the scouts and 4-H to build responsibility and independence in our youth, not to mention the valuable skills. 99 percent of the campground fires I see would not pass muster under the direction of a scoutmaster!
