2016 Quemado, New Mexico May Adventure

Imagine that... my wife wants to stop at Quemado, NM in mid May +/- on our way between Colorado and Nevada.

Of course... that creates another opportunity for those who missed 2015. There is no solid date for May, but somewhere around mid May. It may also be drier than our June 2015 adventure.

Five Days. Base camped either at the Gila National Forest Base Camp site IF with predictable clear blue skies and dry weather.

Or, Quemado Lake campground as the Base Camp at a cost of $50 a day for the group site of up to eight or more divided equally, or if fewer participants using the cheaper individual sites in the common areas.

Eight would be a comfortable number to be Base Camped or at the Group Site.

Review the 2015 Quemado Adventure thread in Boondocking for an overview of last year. Since there is still plenty of time until mid May... an exact date will be forthcoming. This "will happen" as we plan to be in Boulder City, NV sometime in May, anyways.

If it is only us... very simple. One to eight others, very simple. Either Base Camp will be satisfactory for a group.

Due to the large volume of emails coming into my regular home email account, I am today, officially using an email address just for any Boondocking Adventure Threads and interest. This also alleviates the Private Messages needed on the website as well.

My wife Nancy will be keeping records and maintaining them. I appreciate the work Maggie has done in 2015, but now it is time for me to step up and keep everything under one trailer roof.

This is my direct email address for 2016 and beyond.

Paula and I would like to make this trip. We had to cancel last year and welcome the opportunity to go this time.

Please use the "new" email address to hold a spot.

I have a spread sheet now and use this to FIT each trailer into the Base Camp, when necessary. For me...this is sophisticated.

Trying to find the 2015 Quemado Adventure thread...

Hello! I would like to join in for this new Quemado adventure, but couldn't for the life of me find the thread in Boondocking for the 2015 trip. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Many of us find the search functions here challenging.

Link to 2015 Quemado Adventure

Thanks for the link, Maggie! I tried searching while in the forums and also doing the "Google it with the subject and Air Forums" trick and still had no joy.

Five confirmed with THREE left

As of this moment I have confirmed the following for Quemado. If your name does not appear, you are not on my list. Room for THREE and that closes this down for "Trailers in Waiting" list.

Some areas to park if you arrive a day earlier. We plan to be there May 8th, Sunday PM. We will take on water at the Forest Service office, as soon as they open up to unlock the pump.

This place is easily accessible until the last 1/4 mile and we will walk it before turning. Each hunting season can degrade the road, so caution is best. Other options for Trailer Sites exist, but why take second best when we can get the BEST.

#1- Ray & Nancy
#2- Jim & Paula
#3- Neill & Nita
#4- Marshall & Flordemayo
#5- Vicki

50% Off Coupon for DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer

Ray has suggested using the DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer for boondocking trips such as this.

I don't know how long this electronic coupon will last but I found a 50% off code for DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer on Retail Me Not

The coupon can be found at:

http://www.retailmenot.com/view/delorme.com

The products have to be ordered directly from DeLorme. I purchased two atlases and the coupon code took 50% off of the $19.95 retail price of each. You still have to pay S&H and tax but if you're buying more than one atlas the coupon racks up savings quickly.

nvestysly... great deal.

I have Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon, Utah and Nevada.

Later printings are more current.

Whenever I come across a nice camp site... I make notes on the border of that map page, locate the approximate location and always know where to "dive in" if within distance. I should have been marking sooner, but I have already been there... once already.

Each state is not standardized, and many roads cannot possibly be included at the scale used... but while driving down a rural highway I can spot WHERE I want to go. Nancy is open to that page and lets me know WHERE the next turn, if any are to be found.

That is how you find those fabulous camp sites that no body, but locals knew the location. One campsite at a time you end up with an Adventure for other fellow travelers.

A "well traveled back road" usually will have a reason somewhere ahead!

Quemado, NM exploration plans

This year, with fair weather, the 2016 group will try to rediscover the group of Pit Houses within a mile of the Base Camp. Last year the monsoon left muddy road and everyone had to stay close to the main county road. We were unable to get to where these 1000 year old pit houses are lined up on a low mesa overlooking the pine forest.

For those who like to walk, elk and deer antler sheds are fun to find. Just takes a lot of walking... and walking.

My favorite group of Pit Houses are at a base of a 600 foot Mesa where at one time a series of flowing springs provided water. Maybe twenty pit houses, which is a large community. Weather permitting, YOU will be taken into this area and are expected to discover their location. Before we leave to find these pit houses, ancestors to the Cliff Dwellers, you will have an idea of what to look for. Usually you will be standing in the middle of a small ancient town and not realize you are... already there!

The chalcedony "rosettes" are scattered among the weathered volcanics in the Base Camp area. Last year... some of the best specimens were found while hunting for the pit houses in the pine forest. Never found the pit houses, but plenty of agates in the forum of "potato chips" and flat discs of solid agate. Most under 2 inches, but well worth the hunt.

The Gila Cliff Dwellings are within driving distance from Reserve and Glenwood, NM. Find it on a map. Once you are at Base Camp, some might want to ride together and visit these beautiful dwellings. Small, but as well preserved as Mesa Verde cliff dwellings. There is a museum and guides to show you around.

Be prepared with hiking shoes that are comfortable and well broken to fit your feet.

I looked over previous posts and thought I would throw this out before it is too late.

We will be leaving Castle Rock on May 7th Saturday, 'camp' at the Sandia Casino, Albuquerque on the East Side parking area off of Hummingbird Lane, leave Sandia the next morning to Soccoro, NM and west to Quemado for the evening. Parking where ever we can.

The latest Victims

After missing the last Gila Rockdocking event, I was ecstatic to have caught this May event.

Unfortunately for me (and possibly fortunately for someone else) my 40 hour a week job which should have received and completed a government Request for Proposal (RFP) by now has stymied me again.

I have been told we will get an RFP on 1 May and have two weeks to respond. This shoots me right out of the saddle so I will have to hope to catch some other Rockdocking event down the road.

Since I am near my "full retirement age", I am hoping this is the last time that making a living gets in the way of me being able to enjoy life!

I live only a few miles from Sandia Casino, so maybe I can pop up there and buy you a drink on your way through.

Meanwhile, please scratch Dan & Vera, since we won't be able to attend.
(The government strikes again!)

TWO open Positions are available...

An Itinerary for 2016 Quemado, NM Adventure was sent out this morning to the following members. If you had planned on coming and did not receive a copy... you are not on the list. The current list is:

#1- Ray Eklund
#2- Ice Man
#3- Lumatic
#4- Runwoman
#5- Ahab

If anyone is unable to attend, please contact me so you will not be expected. The two who were unable to attend, thank you for letting me know in advance. It does help.

On my trip into New Mexico from Colorado, we 'camp' at the Sandia Casino parking lot on the East Side off of Hummingbird Lane. This most likely will be Saturday May 7th and leaving for Quemado on Sunday May 8th in the morning arriving early afternoon.

There now are TWO open positions, if interested.
