tape issue

I cant find the post on how to remove duct tape residue from exter skin of an AS.
Could any one help answer How I get this off, I would greatly appreciate it. I am not sure what chemical solvant to use

I've used the citurs cleaners with good results, and done no harm. Goof-Off or Goo Gone. Just use a towel and elbow grease, most of all do not use those scratch pads.

Ran into a contra from andy on wd40 and lubing the j-hinge and several said to not use wd40 at all. One post was on the hinge and another post said yes dont get it on the skin. now im confused. Guess I will try the other suggestion first

Try Bestine...it's an adhesive remover. Works great on tape residue ~

Sometimes oil - plain old cooking oil works. Put it on a paper towel and slap it over the adhesive. Ignore for 10-20 minutes. Gently push off with (A) the edge of a credit card, (B) fingernail - artificial works best, wears less (D) an orange stick - you wife will know, it's used for manicure or (D) a non-metallic razor blade - this is the real tool Scraperite Plastic Razor Blades

How I lived without them for so long I'll never know.

Also Mineral Oil works - same application & wait time. And if you don't have any handy, you can find it in any number of common products: Avon Skin So Soft and mascara remover to name a few. Try it. it's cheap.

Soak a rag with gasoline or lighter fluid, but only outside in a well ventilated area. WD40 on a rag should work too, if you are worried about finish, try on a small area out of sight.

I use cosmoline remover, which seems to be a cross between lighter fluid and mineral spirits.

Really, really, really? Totally glad to have my eyes opened to any product preserved in cosmoline. Wanna buy a 1940s-era Jeep? Ter, you have provide a reference I'd be willing to follow up!

My experience has been that mineral spirits are a good place to start. It won't eat into any plastic film coating (clearcoat, plasticoat; refer to references on these from 2air). Mineral spirits are a mild, general solvent. I found that it took a lot of rubbing but eventually took off all the gawdawful, hateful, terr'ble ductape residues. Mild + elbowgrease beats dissolve-everything-in-sight IMO.

I've used WD40 to start my diesel tractor when I run it out of fuel, instead of bleeding the injectors. I also use it as starter fluid to start the fire in my shop wood burner. I haven't used any to remove tape residue . . . I wouldn't want to waste any.

Please expand on the WD40 start use. Do you use it in the air intake as you would either?????? before or after the filter. I would think it would destroy the filter???
Always looking for new tricks. WD40 is something that you always have.

I have a Ford 1500. I just remove the stack off the filter and in goes the WD:-) It's a wet filter. I haven't run it out of fuel lately. I went to using premium diesel and have been making a habit of topping off the tank before taking it out. I bought it when it was almost new in 1984. I tend to keep things. I still drive the Chevy pickup I bought new in 1987. That runs on gas though.

Yes the wet filter would be OK. I had not thought about that style. I have them on the old Massey Pony and Pacer and #81.
I would think one should not do it if a dry filter was inline as it might receive some expansion after ignition.
I prefer dealing with the older equipment also. I still have my 67 GMC 1500, not licenced, but would like to restore it if I ever win the Lottery!

To answer the question about technique . . . My tractor has a clutch crank interlock. In order to crank it, the clutch pedal must be held down. To crank the starter while spraying WD40 into the air intake, I have to stand on the clutch pedal, lean over the steering wheel, turn the key, and spray the WD from an aerosol can. Once it pops (which is right away), I can get off the clutch and the key and just keep the spray going until I get two cylinders firing. It is like spraying ether in a gas engine . . . only without the singed eyebrows:-)

Lacquer thinner on a clean rag works well...but may hurt the aluminum sealant on more modern Airstreams.
