Original 1959 seam-sealant -- what IS this?

After laying in a stock of Vulkem, which was my understanding of what was supposed to be used for sealing seams of new panels, spent today removing my badly-patched street-side lower panel.

Imagine my surprise, when I got to the parts which appear to be original, to find a black, EXTREMELY sticky, sort of double-sided cloth tape sealing the seams! Does anyone know what this is???

That was a seam tape, used by Airstream decades ago.

Vulkem more than takes the place of it.
