Painting a Mural On The Skin

A few years ago I badly scratched the lower roadside segment on my 71. Decided I want to do a mural over the damage, kind of like the attachment. It will be from lower beltline to upper beltline, about 28" x72". Any recommendations for preparation and paint out there?

How about a "wrap"?
It's a printed vinyl graphic that is a peel and stick.
It's what race cars do now instead of paint, and business trucks.
(and it's removable)

Do you have any experience with wraps? I spoke with one guy who said he could do one for $4 sq foot. I will still need to do the artwork.

I haven't done it but I've watched it. The vendor who prints the wrap installs it too. It's a bit tricky because of curves. The wrap is stretchy, and they work out any bubbles as they go. I've seen semi trailers done in a day.
If they can wrap a car, they sure can wrap a AS.
Yes, they'd take your artwork.

No compound curves where I want the wrap.

Most FastSigns franchises do vinyl vehicle wraps. You provide the artwork, they print and do the installation. Price is around $9 a square foot for an uncomplicated wrap like the one you describe. Joe

Colin Hyde did a segment on this subject on The VAP a while back. Only one issue with the wrap is it will leave a witness mark where it was if you ever take it off. That could be worse that the original scratch.

Hi there - there are a few threads in the forums about aluminum patches that are incredibly creative. If you find that painting or wrapping aren't your preference you may find some inspiration there. This link (hopefully) will take you to a few threads:

Sometimes businesses do wraps on your car for free for advertising. This is a very cute picture. I love Disney

Good idea
I've always felt the Airstream body is a great canvas...not too many do anything in the way of graphics for some reason. If you do paint the area, it will come off with stripper just like the vinyl. I doubt you can do vinyl wrap over damage, as it has to cling to a smooth surface.

Seen MUCH worse segment damage...

My two cents: Polish the area to blend with the other areas. As was offered, your artwork is nice, but will leave a shadow after removing it, should you do a vinyl wrap. If you travel enough, some national brands MAY be interested - with emphasis on MAY be interested. They want their ads to be SEEN! Also, they're generally not interested in units that are not attractive and new.

I had a similar amount of damage. Cost to repair was about $3K which I did not want to spend at that time. When I looked at the options I determined it would be best to wait until I was ready to write that check. I used some aluminum tape to mask the worst area (including an actual gash) and deeply polished the rest of the area. It was still obviously damaged but it did look better.
A panel replacement was the only path to restoring the value of the trailer when/if I ever sell it and restoring my pride of ownership. All other solutions are more or less just kicking the can down the road if you ever decide to sell the trailer. After 3 years I bit the bullet and the repair looks fantastic and if I ever sell it I am confident it will be much easier to sell and very likely to result in a higher price. I am really glad I waited.

Ok - if I can't convince you about a sweet patch - could I convince you the scratch adds character?

And if not - here's a bunch of threads on preparing for and painting an Airstream:

If you decide to paint, no matter what you use,it doesn't adhere well to Aluminum without an etch primer.

The mural will actually be Sven the Reindeer (from Frozen) driving the car pulling an Airstream, with Santa Mrs Claus and an elf waving out the windows.

Since I retired I became a professional Santa Claus and I will often do my Santa thing at campgrounds.

I will post a copy of the drawing when I finish it.

Yes, makes a witness mark inconsequential.
