how much mandrel?

Just received the HS 310-5B Friday from VTS. Unfortunately the three day weekend slipped by and I didn't get to try it out. There were very little instructions included only a simple adjustment guide. How much mandrel should you leave when trimming? I welcome any other caution or advice. I will check replies tomorrow as I am pulling the graveyard shift tonight and must turn in for a nap. Thanks to all
