Help with patch

I have a rock guard hat tear. Iíve removed the hat and bought patch aluminum. Would you cut out bad section before repairing? Thank you.

I donít see what difference it makes as long as there are no pieces of the tear that disallows the patch to lay firmly flat over the damage. Good luck

I assume we're looking at the trailer skin and not the segment protector(?).
After the patch, the "hat" will go back in the original spot? If so, I'd clean up the area where the screws will go (or rivets) and make the patch 50% bigger than the original area.
Is there a rib to screw into? or just sheet aluminum? Is there access from the inside? (may require a hole saw.)

I don't know what a"hat tear" is, but that looks like it has been repaired before. Maybe stop drill the cracks and then patch as Mollysdad said.

He said it was rock guard.
