Waiting.... waiting...

for the deadbolt from "Vintage". I think it is stuck on the east side of Wolf Creek Pass! Photo Below

Toilet will go back on this weekend. I kept thinking that for sure if I re-installed it I would need to take it out again.

Who said 4 months is a long time...

Let's see, 4 months, another deadbolt that does not fit. And apparently even though the old one was broken I contemplated putting it back in. Luckily, it appears I threw it out. Whadda you know. That's a first.

So, after drilling out the two small screw holes (not big enough), then larger (not big enough, then using a combination of tin snips round file and a lot of aggravation I got the holes just right. Problem is that the lock just does not fit correctly and I could not figure out why.

So I used the outside of the newest deadbolt and the striker of the previous deadbolt (which, was free, Yay!) And between the two it seems to fit. I did not put any goop behind the outside portion which I'm sure I should and I'm sure everyone will tell me to, but give me another 4 months.

Oh wait! Screw holes to hold the striker in place are way too big after 49 years so let's pop rivet them. 5/32 seems to fit just right. I just do not have the strength to squeeze the gigantic rivet gun. Uh, can I run that way?

Compressed air rivet gun

Hi AirstreamGyspy:

Harbor Freight has two compressed air powered hydraulic rivet guns which are a pleasure to use by those who, like me, are loosing their grip. Here is one for 3/16" diameter shaft pop or Olympic rivets:

- Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

and here is another for 1/4" diameter shaft rivets:

- Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

If you don't yet own your own air compressor, these are a great reason to buy one. After all, an aluminum Gypsy can't ever have too many tools. Nice work on getting your door working again.

Outstanding!

Thanks for the links. The first one seems to be most appropriate for me and the price is reasonable. Love that Harbor Freight!

Oh, but of course I have my own air compressor. I used to carry it with me on all my trips in case I had to lower the air in the tires for some sandy boondocking. Not good to get stuck 50 miles (or more) from the nearest air.

Fred,

i may have my own compressor but every unencumbered airstream female needs a great next door neighbor. He came over this morning to finish the two pop rivets.

Next on my list, hydraulic rivet gun.

Smile Great tools, helpful neighbors

Nice work! Looks like the weather is warming up. Great install on the door lock and the bath project looks fantastic.
I tinkered all weekend on the AS myself.

Recon(struction) Continues

Finished one side of the first wall. Gee, I really move fast, but hey it is getting done. After looking at the old walls I realized that they had not been "finished" on the inside. The wood I am using is quite ugly on the opposite side but I think I'll stain them as close as possible to the opposite side. and seal them too.

Oh, what I forgot to say was what a horrible job it was. Small little bubbles all over. Don't know why. Crummy porous wood maybe. Anyway, when I thought I was done it was so ugly I sanded the whole thing with 220 and then applied boiled linseed oil in desperation. Turned out fantastic with a nice sheen to it.

Anyone reading is probably bored to tears but here is another post on this slow repair.

Ladies! Order the hydraulic rivet gun! I must gain perspective and admit to what I cannot do. Will order today and wait.

This was not the only boo boo. But when you have to do each one two or three times it really gets to be a pain.
