Yay! Yay! Yay!

I've finally gotten around to fixing the doorknob on the Bambi. After replacing the striker pocket when replacing the side panel I thought I'd just put the doorknob back in but the striker was too short which was partially the reason the door flew open. I'd like to think it wasn't really my fault at all :-) So, I did sort of. It really was way too short and that is why I hand't done anything yet. Hoped to find a longer core piece to put in. The Bargman L-300 has a longer striker but is really long. I remembered that I still had the old lock, not sure it was original or not but looked it. Anyway it was not a Bargman L-100-4 but a -6. At some point, the point of this striker was cut down a little, you'll see in the photo. So I just exchanged the cores and presto. I am very happy!

The pink with the X is just to keep the doorknob from banging into the side of the airstream.

Sorry it's not a close up

But the striker is a good 1/2" longer. Just right!

Next, the Deadbolt

Unfortunately the deadbolt was damaged in the slamming scenario or maybe just because it was 47 years old. I was given an old weiser lock, unused in 2000 or so and hoped I could install it when the time came. The old deadbolt was just a thumb bolt, no lock. the new one is keyed on both sides. Hey, it's free.

Here is my problem which I don't think is huge but will make me think a good while before going forward. Photos...

My Question? Do I make the hole larger or just drill out the areas that are needed. Both sides of the lock are identical and mate in the middle including the long thin piece.

Its an apples or oranges thing. I would just remove the minimum amount of aluminum to make it work.

Oh, and I'm going to reinstall the shower pan after finishing the form for it. Can then take my time making a new one (fiberglass also)

Are you a Fiberglass expert? We are looking for someone to do a presentation on Fiberglass at the Vintage Restoration rally....

Hope you are doing well...

Expert!? That's like saying wo-ork (Maynard G. Krebs). Not hardly. But let's see after the next two months if I am capable. If so, I'll be glad to exhibit the process.

Doing great thanks!

After a bit of deliberation, I have decided to get Vintage Trailer Supply's DEADBOLT instead of the free one I have. Why? Because then I don't have to put any new holes in the Airstream door. And it is not keyed on both sides. That is probably why it doesn't have the extra (whatever they are called) extrusions, just the single pin going through.

I also was finally able to remove the coving in the toilet area. :-) Had to take out the toilet anyway in order to put in the new vinyl. NO MORE SILICONE I hope. I will also put a lot less plumbers putty behind the coving as well. Jeepers it's like cement. Of course it comes out a little better if you remember to take out all the screws.

Here is the vinyl flooring.

Do you need to put in a new ring for the toilet every time you take it out?

I should know the answer to that question as my son is a plumber.

Thanks!

Of course it's easy for me to say I would. I have a new ring under the sink right now that I bought planning to pull out the carpet in my Excella but got delayed by other things. Now the seat has started cracking, so I guess I will replace the throne when I do the flooring.

That means I should have an extra one since a new toilet will have one. Talk about be prepared.

As an extra precaution, I would put a coat or three of polyurethane over the wood before applying the new flooring material. Best to be prepared since you've come this far.

Your progress looks great and let us know how the deadbolt installation went. Pix too, of course.

Should probably put some of these posts elsewhere but in my mind these repairs are all because of the replacement of the exterior panel, so here they stay.

Zep started this when we were replacing the panel. I'm finally getting around to finishing it.

Wheel well, new insulation and cover. Trouble is I cannot remember if I am supposed to attach the cover to the trailer wall with screws/rivets or just use the silver tape and tape it to the wall or glue it, (which I don't really want to do because then it will never come off)

You'll note that there is a rail laying across the top, not attached, that i can attach to the trailer wall and the cover.

As bad as the floor looks, all that staining is from years ago before the Bambi became mine. But yes, I do plan on doing that. Thank you for reminding me.

There have been no recent leaks at all, even in the back where the water likes to collect if I am not positioned correctly.

New vinyl is in. Coving reinstalled. I didn't bend it too much when removing. Instead of silicone I put Dap behind instead. Much, much easier.
