Corrosion

Hello, I am new to this forum and would like to know what to do to stop the excessive corrosion all over the body of my 2005 CCD 19' Airstream? I live about one mile from the beach and assumed this was due to the salt air. The trailer has been gently used and only 2 years old, but the corrosion is getting progressively worse and unacceptable based on how long I've had the trailer. Thanks, Laurie - Ventura CA

welcome to the forums offleash....

and the world of a/s decay!

the short answer is wash/rinse it really really well (to remove as much chlorine salts as possible)....

then apply some high quality wax/poly sealant, perhaps several coats....

"advance search" the term 'corrosion' and limit the search to newer models...

use the word filliform and more focused info will appear...

much has been written here already on this issue....

here is one thread to get ya going, but there are others too...

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f142...ams-31743.html

don't waste time looking for corrosion X, it doesn't help much (not at all)

i've tried several sidebyside experiments with it now (on aluminum and iron) and it does NOT hold up at all to rain or washing....

trying to REMOVE the current corrosion is a multistep, involved, limited satisfaction endeavor...

cheers

Hello Laurie -- Welcome to the Forums!

We've all seen breezy seaside days and the haze of spindrift being blown inland. Clearcoat is not a perfect membrane protecting everything. It gets inevitable dings and divots over time. I've had good backpacking gear get heavy aluminum corrosion from single oceanside trips. Traveling salted roads is just as problematic.

Search the forums on filiform corrosion. Also see Twink's thread - http://www.airforums.com/forums/f142...ams-31743.html

I'd wash it thoroughly and frequently. Keep it waxed, and then use something like Boeshield T9 to spot treat the corroding areas.

You can probably slow down the corrosion at least.

I frequently use Meguiar's Quick Detailer on mine, but haven't seen many other people using it on these forums.

Is there any way to store it a little farther from the ocean? I live about 15 miles away from shore and only have two very small instances of filiform corrosion (3 years old).

hi tpi...

does buying the meg's q.d. in gallon jugs qualify?

you've outlined exactly the steps i use, including the boeshield t9.

i do like the slick feel of the qd but i'm not sure it does much for corrosion or prolonging the sealant life.

like u i only have 2 small areas....

both are in a location i failed to wax or seal early.

cheers

...in the oilfeilds they are known to use an application called 'ospho' its good for rust,(you brush down the excessive rust and apply the liquid) overnite the rust will convert into an iron ore type chemical reaction and is readily paintable with oilbase rustoleum paints...this stops the rust action and holds it permenantly for years.Try it! Ps, it has a sulphur kind of smell, (about 14.00 a gallon and Sherwin Williams has it or can order it)
