Cool Yet another paper towel holder solution

Well, the missus wanted a paper towel holder.

And I wanted to avoid something that needs to be screwed into the underside of our nice 2022 Airstream Globetrotter 27FB Twin kitchen cabinets.

I also didn't want to attach a paper towel holder using high strength double sided adhesive tape in case we didn't ultimately like the initial location, or we want to change to some other kind of paper towel holder solution.

I kind of like being creative (picture the missus cringing right now as I say this), so I got ahold of a friend of mine with a 3D printer and came up with a design that I could mount using 4 strips of XL 3M Command heavy picture hangers (20lb load rating per strip).

The paper towel roll is held in place by a 3D printed rod that slides through the hollow cardboard tube in the roll, into the larger holes in the paper towel supports, then slots into a notch located at the bottom of the hole in the end of each support.

The rod has integral end caps that are larger than the diameter of the rod in order to prevent the rod from sliding out of the supports.

Here is what I came up with. Seems to work pretty well. We are about to start on a 4 month Airstream adventure trip. If I like these, I might reprint them using a nice satin white pla resin (hmm, or glossy white) in order to match our white Globetrotter cabinets.

What do you think?

Looks great.
If you don't want to go to that much trouble, we have attached items with industrial sticky-back velcro. It is removable and any residue comes off with no issues.

Foobar, we like the ‘hang down’ design. I got a 3d printer for Xmas and we’ve been playing around with printing different things (wedges for vintage suicide doors). Did you get the .STL File off Thingaverse? We have a roll of silver filament that would be perfect. We’ve never had a hanging paper towel holder in the 55, so that would be perfect. Thanks

I have asked my friend for a copy of the design files. When I get them, I will try and post a copy in this thread. Might be a couple of days before I can get back to this task though. We leave tomorrow morning for our next 4 month Airstream adventure.

That might work well too. Skip on using the screws and use sticky back velcro or command strips to mount it.

Got a starting point for the design from printables.com

Then we made our own modifications.

My friend uploaded the design here at this link. Let me know if you can access it.

We use this one. Came with option of screwing it in or using adhesive...the adhesive it came with has held up fine for the last year. A plus is that it won't unroll. $12 on Amazon.

Search for industrial sticky velcro. I have also gotten this at Lowes.
It comes in a roll or in small sheets. I have used for mounting pictures, my knife holder, my paper towel holder, and even cut thin strips to help my curved kitchen sink lower cabinet stay shut better.

Thanks. Lots of velcro products. Wanted to make sure I was looking at the right version.

I think it looks very nice! However, "wife" commented it should be mounted 90 degrees so as not to cover your plug, like ours is! You may not be able to mount it perpendicular due to your cabinets as I look at your pics...oh well.

Your better half has a good point :-). Unfortunately, our cabinets are not deep enough to support rotating the roll by 90 degrees with the current 3D printed design. The missus also wanted the roll out of her face too, so this location seemed like the best compromise.

Also, we never use more than 1 plug on the 120v receptacle and the current mounting location leaves one socket accessible. We shall see how well this works on our current trip (we just departed today). So far so good. 370 miles today and the paper towel roll was still in place at the end of the journey and hadn't unrolled :-)

Yea, our receptacle is actually under the cabinet...had to look for it first time I wanted to plug in the coffee pot! Was thinking, AS missed something..lol.

The paper towel holder .stl file came from thingaverse.com. I needed a design like this because it hugs the underside of the headlocker and back wall so it doesn't encroach on the counter space below. I did have to reprint one base using a better fill pattern because the first one cracked.

The key holder was made to keep all our keys and gadgets for locking the trailer before towing. It's labelled Maybellene because that's the trailer's Airstream officially registered name (which was a #1 hit in 1955 when it was born).
