Vintage Moulding Question

Hi everyone. Someone has perhaps already asked this question, but I didn't find it yet.... we are restoring our 1963 Bambi (hubby is Nor-Cal Bambi) we have the new laminate on our new countertop ~ it is the edging and moulding I am not sure about. We have found some vintage looking aluminum that will fit on the counter edge... but what about between the wall and countertop? Sort of a little backsplash... the plastic (?) material that was there is too hard and icky to use again. What have any of you used? Where did you find it? Our local hardware stores and Lowe's haven't had anything to solve the problem. The material needs to be able to fit the contour of the back of the Bambi where the kitchen is located (curb side).

Funny you should bring this up. Just last week I received 12' of this aluminum extrusion from Oasis RV in Tucson. It was a bear tracking this down through the factory. I had to refer one of the service dept. phone answerers to an interior shot of the 75th Anniversary Edition by Winnick so she knew what I was speaking of. It took them a week and a half just to find the stuff since it was special order. I haven't put mine on just yet. This is a shot of the original stuff. It's a dead ringer for this. Call up Don at Oasis, he'll know what you're speaking of.

How about the plastic stuff that has a pretty much identical profile? Used along the edges of the floor in my '64?

Plastic? Plastic, you say? No luck with that. Plastic will detiorate pretty quickly in our desert heat. Surprisingly enough, this stuff wasn't that expensive. Less than $3 a foot, will hold up better than plastic especially when being kicked and hit with the vacuum.

Yes - but the plastic will conform to the uneven form of the wall, whereas the aluminum will not.

Just how uneven is this wall? This moulding will bend around the inside curvature to the wall at my bathroom cabinet as it did originally.

I'm looking for the "T" shaped molding for edging the table top and refrigerator top in my 64 Safari. Anyone have any sources for this?

It's half round with barbed “T” insert on back to fit in grove along table edge.

Outwater has tons of 'T' moulding and, contrary to their name, they have it in metal. Lots of choices. I used the polished and rippled 13/16" on my galley cabinet trim and table.

Thanks for the information! And especially thanks for the picture! We may try some alternatives, but we will see what we decide. Trying to get our bambi on the road! Getting closer, but still not done.

I don't think it's plastic...I think it's vinyl, when it gets old, early vinyls can look like plastic, they get hard and brittle. The closest thing I've come by is a rubber or vinyl 2-1/2" carpet base.

Roppe, Armstrong, Flexco, Johnsonite all make it, among others. It comes in many colors...

Thanks Shari - I think that's a little taller than I want. I might just have to suck it up and buy the aluminum that flyfshr tracked down.(Aluminum Trim Finally Found) It looks like the same size and profile. At that price though, it will have to wait until a few other things are completed
