The good old Barter system .. time tested!
In times like this its time to bring back the good old barter system. Whats a dollar worth right now. Every business is trying to carve out some profit out of desparation.. i dont blame them.. just dont want to be part of it. Im a mechanic by trade. I posted an add on craigslist interested in finding someone that might have the skills to refinish the 32 cabinent / doors / drawers inside the airstream. I tried it and i dont like the way they are coming out. I found a nice guy that works for a cabinent business (verified and referenced) with a truck thats not running right. We talked about bartering our skills based on the time each of us will have into the job. I figure that if i took these somewhere i could easily have a $500.00 dollar bill. Im hoping that i can diagnose it and fix something that involves mostly labor. Im so excited to get the doors finished as it will really freshen up the interior..

I like the idea of bartering. I think of system of credits and debits on services or goods would be timely in this economic time.

We have one of those, it's called dollars and cents I do work, you give me some dollars, and I can go trade those for something else I want done.
Bartering depends on both parties following through, and based on the deals I've done with people on CL, I wouldn't depend on that. Most of them are barely able to follow through on showing up to buy something!

Yup.. I hear ya.. You just never know. This particular guy works at a cabinent shop and his boss told him that since times are slow if he wants to do a little side work through the shop then he can. He is handing over his car to me and i wont return it until the cabinents are ready to be picked up.

I like that Idea.
Hi, vlamica. I like the barter system a lot.
(1.) I gave a good running 1976 Pinto to a friend of mine in exchange for some body work and a complete two tone paint job on my 1959 Ford Galaxie. [we were both happy]
(2.) I gave a new tool box to the same person above to align body parts and complete paint job on my 1951 Ford Custom. [he was a bodyman /painter and I was a Mac Tools distributor]
(3.) I gave a commercial size Air Compressor to a friend in exchange for an Air Conditioner system installed in my 1988 Ford Ranger. [My cost on the Air Compressor was cheaper than it would have cost me to pay for this job] ....[ His cost on the Air Conditioner was cheaper than it would have cost him for the Air Compressor] we both made out.
Note: these were people who I worked with at the Ford dealer before I became a Mac Tools distributor. [friends] Also this was many Moons ago.

I agree. It takes more energy to put this together but i actually think because it becomes personal people try harder to please each other. Funny about the mac tool distributor.. i have mostly mac tools. Infact I have many of the 50 year anniversary "Gold sets" of tools. I dont even see Mac tools come around our dealership anymore. Im sure they are still out there...

Best trade I made this year was a $1500 Plumbing job for a '74 Argosy 26 footer. Its painted a beige/tan color and my two adult daughters quickly named it "The Wiener Mobile". My biggest surprise was everything worked! I figured at least a replumbing job but no leaks, water heater works, refer is cold and the AC works great! When fall hit I tried the heater and it works fine! I figure I can't be that lucky so I'm waiting for some to fall off or go bad! Dave

I work the barter system a good bit, The last was with my ex wife in the vet field, A spay and neuter on the cat and dog for some cabinet work. And before that a few built-ins for three full acsess passes to a Hannah Montana concert. Made my daughter very happy.

The barter system is alive and working here in NC. I was able to trade off a SOB trailer and get a working electric golf cart to use in the campground.

The higher that taxes get to pay the national debt and entitlement programs, the more attractive bartering becomes.

Which entitlement programs are you speaking of? Welfare or AFDC cost the government 1% of the budget or 12 billion dollars a year. They just gave 85 billion to AIG and billions more to other private investment companies and spend a billion a week in Iraq. Corporation have always received far more government welfare than individuals in this country. They can start to cut these intitlement programs by saying NO to the car companies who now have their hands out.

AFDC is only one of quite a few government entitlement programs.
In 2005, Senator Judd Gregg, then Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee stated that "Mandatory entitlement spending now represents a whopping 55 percent of all federal spending. If left on its current path, that could jump to more than 60 percent in 10 years. That will force us to cut out other necessary expenditures or raise taxes and weaken our economy." Source: The Hill newspaper, Washington DC.
