Soft overhead cabinet option

As my trailer rebuild drags on year after year, I have had plenty of time to think about what to do with my upper cabinets. I could rebuild and replace them completely with some custom wood working, or I could refurbish the original aluminum extrusion and plasticy veneers, to be perhaps better looking and functional.

Another option which I have given thought to over the years is to create a hanging, soft storage system out of some durable fabric like cordura. I recently discovered that such a thing is already in use in the conversion van world (see the link below).

One of my biggest reasons for wanting to go the fabric route is that I tend to bang my head on overhanging stuff, and I think there will be a lot less swearing if the thing is soft. That said, I don't really want my interior to look cheap and conversion-van-ish.

Any thoughts, pro or con?

Hmmm, maybe I can retitle the thread as a towing conundrum...

Hey wait—maybe the overhead cabinets are an integral part of the structure, and the roof I’ll collapse without a hard cabinet….
