Replacing Dining Table Top

I recently took delivery on a 2017 23FB and want to replace the Formica dining table top with solid wood top. Wanting to know if anyone knows of a Airstream knowledgeable vendor who is offering this type of custom replacement?

wood table tops

Plan on replacing the hardware to attach the mount. Now go to EBAY and search under Boat parts....Table top. You will get the best quality and a surprising variety. Mount your old hardware and the table.

I'm not aware of any "off the shelf" replacement wood tops for Airsteams or RVs that can be ordered from stock. It's a fairly uncommon modification and the variety of dimensions and wood choices would make keeping an inventory impractical.

We did replace the Formica top with a wood one, and simply had a local finish carpenter make the new table top and install it. Ours is a "piece of art" and cost more money than most people would want to spend but I'm sure a simpler design and less expensive choice of woods could be made to lower the cost. Also, you could consider a local cabinet maker or other woodworking specialist.

I would think any good cabinet maker could make a top.
But there's a lot of options.
1. a plywood top with a routered emblem or name.
2. a solid top made from boards glued together, butcher block style. (Heavy)
3. a simple top because you want a bigger or smaller surface.
4. you hate formica.

My motorhome dining table was ruined by a leak and I'm going to replace it with solid oak. The table top is also the bed bottom between the seating so it has to be sturdy.

That is beautiful. I think the table top that came as stock is less than desirable. I admire yours, and may copy it!

Teton,

I'm not sure what you're looking for, from a style perspective, but we found a young craftsman (Adam Billstone) in Warren, PA that builds custom furniture of select hardwoods. He custom made our dinette table top(s), corner table tops and kitchen counter top all to match and each to our specific measurements. Ours have a rustic look to them. Her's a link to our thread that includes some photos and descriptions. https://www.airforums.com/forums/f39...er-155180.html Adam was as excited about the project as we were, so we dropped by his shop to show him how they looked.

Good luck,
Roy and Marie

Do any of you trailer people ever consider weight before changing things? A solid counter will weigh considerably more than a Formica table top.

I used 3/4 paper core Reboard, encased in a solid 1" white oak frame for screwing hardware too with solid core laminate on both sides. Very strong, durable and very light.

https://reboard.se

http://www.formica.com/en/uk/product...re#swatchesTab

These materials will never expand, contract or cup like a solid wood top will.

Cheers

There are so many options to choose from. Get a local cabinet maker in your area, I’m certain they can fix you right up. Keep in mind to transfer the mounting hardware and be sure to inform them if it’s going to be used as a bed support once in awhile.

I want a smaller two-person tabletop for several reasons. Easier for conversation when another couple drops by. And easier to lounge behind when not eating (less confining).

But I want to keep my original tabletop for resale. So I would like to buy replacement hardware to fit in the same slots on the wall.

Found oak table on Craigslist for $25.
Cut off the last 1/3rd of it.
Mounted it on back wall of trailer.
Please see photo.

A hardwood table isnt difficult to make for a woodworker or cabinet maker. This is the one I build and installed in our 1964 Overlander during a full renovation/rebuild we recently completed. Weight was considered in my design. The finished table is 5/8 thick.Click image for larger version

Before you saw down an oak tree, keep in mind that solid wood is heavy, and is subject to "checking", twisting and cracking with temp and humidity changes.
A table made of many small boards glued together is more stable than one made with a few. The assorted grain keeps the lumber from bending.
Furniture in $million dollar jets is made from corrugated "cardboard" with a thin wood veneer. Light and strong.

I think I'd shop Ikea furniture where their tables are made of hundreds of pieces of scrap wood. Not exotic, but stable.
Let an Asian woodworker do the hard part, you cut it to size.

We replaced our 25 FB FC table top with an identical one, but 9 narrower, for a 19 Bambi. It came with all hardware so the original is stored away.

I love your solution and how it folds down so easily. Do you use the same hardware as my 25 FC? Can you post photos of the hardware and underside of your table?

I am reserved about that,, got a virus like in my Mac with things to download last week. I sure would love pics of your table.

I posted a picture on the 23FB Forum thread of a table top replacement. See post 421. There are other posts on this topic in the thread. May help with your research.

The first section is attached with a piano hinge to a narrow box/drawer like carrier with drawer slides inside that connect to a piece of 2x4 that is glued and pocket screwed to the bottom of a 7 wide solid walnut window sill. The sill is supported by the end of the banquette and a 1x1 aluminum angle that is riveted to the skin. Small screws fasten the sill to the angle. Offset saw kerfs at each end allowed it to curve around the corners.

The second section is attached to the first using SOSS barrel hinges. The maple legs are hinges to the bottom of a drawer that supports the second leaf when pulled open.

Attachment 304228Attachment 304229Attachment 304230Attachment 304231Attachment 304232Attachment 304233

The first section is 25.5 by 26 and the flip out section is 23.5 by 26
