Removing Rear Sofa on 30' Flying Cloud

The Boss has decided I am to remove the rear sofa / bed on our 2016 Flying Cloud 30'.

She wants to replace the sofa with a pair of recliners to be named later.

Yesterday I removed all the storage items we keep under the sofa and had a good look around underneath.

Based on the way the sofa looks screwed into the floor as well as the side walls, it looks like if I remove the eight or so Phillips head wood screws, that the whole sofa box will simply lift out.

She wants to leave the rear cusion storage unit, as well as the side unit, which covers the inverter.

Is this really as easy as it looks or am I missing something fairly significant?

Thanks so much.

Rich

I think there's some electronics back there. I bought mine with recliners already, and there's a table in between the recliners that houses the electronics.

^^^ Thanks, we always liked the recliner option on the '10-'14 Flying Clouds.

Well, I'm going to start carefully undoing screws and see how it goes. I will post back my findings for anyone else doing this project.

We took out all the front and side seating in our FC 25RB and put in factory components from the FC 30 Recliner model as in FCStreamer's photo, plus a custom cabinet to cover the converter.

It took about an hour to remover it all. Jackson Center put in the components from their production line.

Thanks Doug.

Would you say it was a case of simply undoing wood screws? Nothing was glued in place?

Nothing but screws, and not hard to get to any of them. We saved all the parts in case we ever wanted to change it back, but we've used in now for several years and will never go back.

Very easy job. I did it on a 25' and a 30'. Remove screws, pull out and open space awaits for the chairs you select. I would recommend some type of "zero clearance" recliners. In this way they can be back up against the wall and recline out without hitting the wall. I used different Lazy Boys in the 30'. In the two times we did this I saved everything and put it all back in prior to selling the trailers.

The fancy term for "zero clearance recliners" is "incliners" in case you see that term. We have them in our den and they are nice and don't waste a lot of space. guskmg

Removing Rear Sofa on 30' Flying Cloud

As an experiment, my wife thought about putting in the cushions from our two IKEA Ektorp sofas we are selling.

Turns out they fit pretty well. Obviously the colors don't match but it sits great.

So we went and bought two more new sets of covers for $50 each, and will put them in the coach when we get on the road.

We think for us this is a good option, vs trying to remove all the couch hardware.

Well just an update on this.

The IKEA sofa cushion idea did not work out. Although thick, the visions still sat on the flat wood of the pull out bed. It just wasn't that comfortable.

So we pulled all those out and reverted to factory.

Still pondering options at this point.

Question, when you put in the recliners do you "bolt" them down to the floor, or do they ride ok "loose". I know the trailer can really get hopping around as you go down the road. FWIW, the carpet in our trailer has been removed and cork flooring installed (but not under the existing sofa, where it is still carpet - something that would have to be corrected if we went with recliners - or not LOL).

The reason I ask is I have to do something about the Flexsteel jackknife sofa in ours. It's fairly ok to stretch out on and read/watch TV etc., but if sitting "up" on it, you can feel the bar running along the front push up through the foam and is uncomfortable. I have thought about having it reupholstered and looking into having some better/denser foam installed for the seat, especially the front where the metal pushes against my thighs. Of course, I could wind up spending more than that process than on a new one that would hopefully be more comfortable. I know there are other RV sofas other than
Flexsteel that I could check out (I think I have read good stuff about Villa brand sofas). I would think about a normal household sofa, but I have my inverter and solar controller under the sofa along the front bulkhead and I need to be able to access them. BTW, currently, I removed the screws from the front access panel under the sofa and installed magnets and handles so I can easily remove the panel for access to the electronics (I also did the same for access to the water pump under our double closet, why in the world Airstream thought it was a good idea to have to remove a bunch of screws to get to it was beyond me - but I digress). Furthermore, there is storage (which of course we would sacrifice if we went the recliner route). We would lose the easy access to the devices if we used a conventional sofa, I would hate to have to remove it whenever I might need to check on things.

Anyway, any input is welcomed.

I've done both in two different AS. I did not bolt down recliners in a 25', but did put I bolts in corners to secure when traveling. On a 30' I fastened them to the floor. Both methods worked well.

Another data point:

My wife has ID'd this compact power recliner love seat from "Best" furniture in Indiana called a "Felicia".

http://www.wayside-furniture.com/ite...cnsl/215051826

It is a special order 3-5 week item, and is available in a cloth fabric called "Tumbleweed" which is near as darn it to the "Cashew" UL on our '16 FC.

The back rests come disassembled, meaning it will fit through our 26" wide door. The 63" or so width will fit if I remove the pull-out sofa as well as left hand arm rest.

I measured one in the store and extended, it "should" fit in the open space. The armrest has storage as well as two 5V USB charge ports. Foot rest/recliner action is via two touch switches, one on the out side of each arm rest.

We are about 90% on ordering one of these.

We will lose the storage there, which is a disappointment. But since the L shape sofa is *really* uncomfortable, we think it's a worthwhile trade.

We do plan on keeping the old parts.

Well, we ordered one from Star Furniture in north Houston.

Unfortunately, Best Furniture discontinued 'Tumbleweed'. So we opted for a vinyl close to Cashew called "Straw".

We pick it up at the warehouse in Katy Texas in 3 to 4 weeks.

So today we received the sofa from Star Furniture.

To say we are happy is an understatement. I'll post more details later, but the removal of the Airstream sofa was straightforward.

The sofa we bought is in vinyl (we have a dog) for wear, but the color is a very close if not exact match to our Cashew.

Forgive me being in the picture as I'd just brought it in place, but here's how it looks:

Removing Rear Sofa on 30' Flying Cloud

More info on the Loveseat:

It is made by Best Furnishings in Indiana:

http://www.besthf.com/besthf/Furniture/Home

The specific model we bought was a: "Felicia Power Space Saver Console Loveseat", L270CQ4 Fabric 26505U Color Straw:

We ordered it from Star Furniture in North Houston TX on 3/21, and picked it up at the Star warehouse in Katy TX on 4/14/17. (It actually arrived in Katy on Monday 4/11/17.)

We paid $1275.

It arrived without the two seat backs installed. My wife and I were able to lift it from the truck and fit it through the 26" doorway of our 30' FC.

We set it in place, and slid the seat backs in place. I attached power to our street side 120VAC outlet.

The seats are very comfortable for us. The two USB ports and storage are a bonus. The unit has a steel frame and is fairly robust. We don't currently plan to anchor it to the floor.

Weight wise, between the AS L shape sofa, cushions etc. that we took out, I think the net weight change is neutral with the Loveseat. We stored all the original AS L sofa and cushions in a 5x5 Storage a Unit at a Public Storage in Katy TX. (Down the road, if we sell our 30' FC, we plan to reinstall the AS L sofa back In place. )

We've sat in the powered foot rest seats of a 30' Classic, and our Loveseat is more comfortable because the backs also recline (we were quoted approximately "$8000" by JC to convert our L shape sofa to the Classic seats).

All in all we think this is one of the best mods we've done to our trailer.
