Reclaimed Hickory Dining Booth Table Top

Anxiously awaiting,

Our new reclaimed hickory dining booth table top in production by Chris Mauer @ The Furniture Place in Tarpon Springs, FL.

Commissioned in December, having completed the plaining and prepping the live edges, he's in the process now of pouring the colored epoxies into the crevices and then the clear coat epoxy.

The finished product will be nothing short of amazing.

More to come in next week or so in the form of finished photos once we receive and install it.

As I recall, the overall thickness will be the same, approx. 3.2cm (1.26").

We wanted to maintain the table-top's dual functionality; thus it has been purposefully planed on both sides to the same thickness of the original table top in order to maintain the ability to lower it to the bed conversion level and maintain use of the folding base support on the underside. The center of the underside has also been milled further to accept and mount to the existing table top metal platform base that bolts to the top of the motorized pedestal and will be finished on both sides with a satin sheen clear epoxy top coat.

While it looks a bit "ashey" in the photo, the natural colors of the hickory together with the crevices (to filled with black epoxy and specs of blue) will be very close to the existing mocha cherry cabinet finish in our Classic.

Chris, is a true artist when it comes to making custom furniture pieces with reclaimed woods so we're confident it's going to look fantastic (in our view) as well as be fully functional.

Looks like it'll be beautiful. I don't have a 30' Airstream so I'm trying to picture how the table will be oriented. Hopefully such that when in the lowered position forces will be with the grain, not across it and cause it to split in the middle.

That was a challenge I faced with the table I made for my 28" AS. Had to be strong across the edge supports when lowered as a bed, but also not sag in the other direction when used as a table. Solution was battens under the table to help strengthen it but still allow the natural movement wood has as humidity changes.

Look forward to seeing the finished project!

That’s going to be beautiful! You’ve given me ideas for my own AS.

That's going to be so gorgeous! We're discussing doing similar thing, from San Diego Urban Timber. A van dweller had one of their custom tabletops and it was so unique and beautiful!
Look forward to seeing your finished work!

What you see in the photo of my OP is the new tabletop positioned on the sawhorses in the reverse orientation of which it will mount & rest on the pedestal, As shown (in the original photo) the lower edge will actually be wall side while the top edge shown will be the outer edge thus reversed and the the grain of the hickory (which is a hardwood) will run lengthwise (top to bottom as shown, or from the wall to its outer edge.

In terms of loading bearing we have no concerns whatsoever as with our Classic there are rubber bump stops mounted on the wall as well as a folding floor brace on the underside of the table-top to which when coupled with the large metal base pedestal platform in the center (all shown below) will provide additional support to the tabletop when lowered and used as a bed.

We anticipate the weight of the new one piece, solid hickory tabletop to be close to what the original two piece OEM corian table top was (which is a combination of corian counter topping material overlaid and adhered to a 3/4" plywood base).

Hope this helps clarify your concerns....

Thank you, we certainly think it will.

Before commissioning the subject table-top we had considered having a new one made using glass and jeweled mosaics with a chosen compass theme by an Artist in Santa Fe but as we progressed with our design, the pricing became somewhat prohibitive - due to our getting too detailed. Then and solely by "happens chance" while visiting the Tampa area we stumbled upon Chris and his custom reclaimed wood work artistry in Tarpon Springs, FL After seeing his showroom and work, we commissioned him to to the reclaimed wood version which we're excited about and found the cost of doing so to be reasonable.

My message to you being, your not far from Santa Fe and there are some wonderful Artist there that can create some beautiful one of a kind mosaic pieces if that might be something you'd be interested in and not committed to wood.

Just an option to think about.

Sounds good. With our 28' Flying Cloud we don't have the center support your table has, so when in the bed platform position relies on the wooden lip under the seat cushions, hence the wood grain has to run across them. Not shown in the photo are the battens under the table to give it additional stability in the lengthwise direction.

Erik & Carol,

I wasn't aware of the different table mounting design and now understand your reference to the grain of the wood and how it has to be laid. Anyway, its fun to create and add our own personal touches. Looks perfect. Well done.

That's beautiful! Such character and texture in the wood! You must be so excited!
That's a good idea about Santa Fe. It appears there are many specialized reclaimed wood furniture designers around the country. Definitely worth exploring. Thank you :-)

If this helps others, shown below is the underside of our new live edge hickory dining table top for our Classic.

Note that it includes a template opening routed 1/8" deep to accept the metal base plate mount for the table top along with 10 pre-set screw anchors for attachment of the wood table top to the base plate.

As well, 4 ("to be") bored 5/8" ID x. 1/2" deep holes will be included to permit clearance of and over the existing 9/16's bolt heads of which serve for the attachment of the table top metal base plate to the top of the motorized pedestal and needed to ensure we can continue to use the new dining table top in the correct lowered position as an additional bed when desired and per its design.

Live Edge Reclaimed Hickory & Epoxy Dining Booth Table Top

Installed our new, live edge reclaimed hickory dining booth table top with black epoxy pour and satin finish today for our Classic M30.

C/O Chris Mauer, Artist/Owner of The Furniture Place in Tarpon Springs, FL. Commissioned it in December and received it yesterday.

Was properly sized to maintain the dining booth's functionality as a bed. Basically 0-zero weight difference between the OE TT and the Hickory, maybe 1-2 lbs but no more.

Photos when lowered for use as a second bed. Also added a lightweight picture frame as trim on the underside and to give the appearance of depth.
