Pretty backsplash
has anyone ever tried to tile the walls around the kitchen sink. I really want to put in glass 1" tiles but I'm concerned that the movement of the trailer will shake them loose. i wonder what would happen if I used caulk instead of grout. would it provide better adhesion and flexibility. OR.....should I just forget the whole thing

I was thinking of doing the same thing. I think the Trempro(caulk) would allow one to do this, but I am not sure. I will be anxiously watching for additional comments.

that's perfect....maybe I'll just wait till you do it first and see how it goes. Would you use the caulk behind the tile as well, or just in the grout line? dying to make this work. hope we get some good advice.

I would recommend Polyseamseal Tub & Tile Adhesive Caulk. It's not silicone based and has excellent adhesive qualities. The Tub and Tile version also has extra mildew inhibitors. The main thing is to get the surfaces clean to insure adhesion. You will need to use it between the tiles and the mounting surface to hold the tiles, just the gaps where the grout would go will not do. Also, you'll need to coat the back of glass tiles so nothing, including bubbles in the adhesive, shows through.

I had some leftover 1x1 tiles at home that I used in a small area near the stove. I needed to cover up the area where I removed the original backsplash.
I used a scrap piece of aluminum as the backing and glued the tiles onto it with no grout seams. I simply butted each tile next to each other and it has traveled fine. It is a small area but without the grout lines, I haven't had any issues.
It added nice color and was cheap!
BTW, I think glass is one of the heavier material choices.

All ceramics add weight to the trailer. I'm a general contractor so have experience with tile etc.
For the backsplashes I would recommend using an epoxy grout. It is extremely strong. If you use something like kerabond with keralastic it would not likely fail if bonded to aluminum walls.
Again, remember you are adding substantial weight to the trailer.
Mine came with 12x12 ceramic tile floor in the kitchen and bath areas. When I get to it I will remove it and install something like Cork flooring to save weight.
Gasoline keeps going up in price. We should reduce weight, not increase it if we want to save fuel and be environmentally friendly. Don't really know how we can think that towing a trailer for pleasure is environmentally friendly but that's the way it is.

great info....thanks everyone. So, each 12x12 tile weighs 3.25 lbs. I would need to use approx 6, so about 20lbs with adhesive. is this a deal breaker? star kitty convinced me that it looks great. maybe I should reduce it to a smaller area like you did. most of the area is window, so it's tempting to go big. will post pics when i get it done. The bathroom has been removed, so i have a little weight loss there (not planning to replace it) should i concern myself with adding 20lb to the other side of the camper for balance?

The smaller tiles will be less likely to crack. You can use liquid nails to adhere the tile to the wall, then the epoxy grout like Al suggested. I have been looking at tile at the backplash on my rig as well.

Here is a link to a recent thread about the same topic. We did the small glass tiles with good results.

I like those too. how does the weight compare? I'm thinking they might be lighter than the glass. would you install them the same way?

The latest issue of Airstream Life features a trailer that used tile for the backsplash and the bath. It describes the grout he used.
