Front - Rear bulkhead

Has anyone removed the front or rear bulkhead with the two cabinets.
Looking for ideas how to get rid of those plastic moulded end pieces and fabricate
a wooden one to match the new decor. They have cracks in them and don't want to bother to repair them. Or if painting them is the way to go, if there is no other choice. I do like the added storage in them, so don't want to eliminate that option
Any Ideas
