I recently finished building a storage cabinet to put in front of the TV in my 2009 27FB Ocean Breeze. The last couple of trips my Wife and I had been wanting a little more storage and counter prep space for cooking. We’re empty nesters so we don’t need the space for the kids to sleep on the couch anymore. I got my ideas from several other threads on Airforums about building a storage cabient so thank you to those that have posted about how they built theirs. To help out anyone with ideas about how to build one yourself I’m posting a quick overview of how I built mine. Here is the finished cabinet.
I wanted it to match the rest of the countertops in my Ocean Breeze edition and I called up Airstream and they were able to tell me it was Wilsonart Frosty White color with Matte finish laminate sheet. I ordered it from Home Depot online in a 3x8 Sheet which I had to order another 3x8 sheet because I didn’t have enough. If you’re ordering get at least a 3x15 or 20ft length.
I started out building a frame using a Kreg pocket jig hole using 4” wide boards that were 1” thick. I used 3/4” thick sanded plywood and built the sides and top. After the sides and top were cut I used contact cement and coated both the plywood and laminate sheet. I used wooden dowels on the plywood to line up the laminate and pulled the dowels out and used a rolling tool to smooth out the laminate. I used a router bit that cut the laminate flush to the plywood and then sanded the sides using a orbital sander.
After the laminate was glued on the plywood I used the Kreg jig to attach the frame to the Plywood sides. I then put in a shelf that can be removed if I need to. I then attached the top which I had only put the bottom part of the laminate on so I could put the laminate on the top after I screwed in the top so there wouldn’t be any screw holes showing. Before I put the laminate on I used a belt sander to make rounded corners for the top. So far one of the best templates I’ve found for rounded corners is a CD disc.
Now that it was pretty much built I used some aluminum edging that bought off Amazon since I figured it would match the interior. I also ordered some Bamboo style handles since I couldn’t find the original Ocean Breeze edition handles. I used some hinges I also ordered off Amazon. After everything was done I put it in and used a 90 deg piece of metal to screw down the cabinet to the floor.
We will be using it for the first time this Thanksgiving where we are meeting up at a Campground in Georgia with My Brother’s Family who has a 30ft Bunkhouse, and my Parents who have a 25FB. We’ll also have our kids there, and several other family members who are staying in Cabins. The storage cabinet will be put to good use.
If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask. I’m no carpenter but I think this turned out very well.
