Bathroom vanity and shower refinish

We have a 76 Sovereign and need to refinish the vanity and shower. Do you have any suggestions on what produce to use on the plastic?

I used a 2 part expoxy paint made for tub and tile on my 68 (I think it was call Tile Doc). The box said you could brush it but the results were not good so I sprayed it (had to thin it a good bit). It has held up well for 4 years with no cracks or signs of wear. It is very nasty stuff to breath so if you go that route use a good carbon filter respirator.

I'm getting closer to this project myself- interested to hear the different ideas.

Just looked at the Tile Doc and it says its "Not Recomended for Galavanized Metal or any Flexible Surfaces". Are there different versions of this product or is there not enough flex in these plastic tub & sinks to be an issue?

I used an epoxy paint from a marine supply store. Rolled the paint on , not a great finish but it worked for the time frame I had . you might call it a 5ft paint job.

My 78 Sovereign bath is moving up on my list. After cleaning layers of gook off the plastic, I sprayed some of the rattle can plastic bonding paint (krylon) on a couple of areas to see how it would look and hold up. It is a light shade of yellow, and most closely matched the flower print on the wallboard. It covered well, and does not peel even when attacked with a scraper. Any surface imperfection will telegraph through, so close attention to surface preparation and repair is essential. I have a couple of cigarette melted areas that will need to be repaired with a spot of bondo or other filler.
I have a cast iron claw foot tub and porcelain that I sandblasted and recoated with the Tile Doc, as described by TWind68 in post #2. I found it at Sherwin Wiliams. It is a two part epoxy that can be rolled on, (it has a 4 hour pot life) or sprayed. I used a small detail sprayer and had an excellent result that is the next best thing to new porcelain. It has stood up to daily use over the last 7 years, and cleans up easily with BarKeepers Friend.

That being said, the epoxy paint is the superior choice for several reasons. However, if you plan on spraying it in your AS, Mask EVERYTHING that you don't want to have paint on. Spraying gives the most consistent thickness and best result. This stuff sticks like a marine grade isocyanate coating. It would be nearly imposible to get the dried stuff off your aluminum framed window or worse. It will scrape off of glass with a safety blade. But that is about the only thing.

I would not recommend spraying this stuff without ventilation at a high turnover rate, emphasis on exhaust, AND a respirator that is rated for the product. It has a vapor that will hurt you if you let it. Seriously. Imagine horseradish/wasabi in the nose.
After it cured(about 2 days at room temperature), it was ready for use.

Rattle canning it would leave a splotchy look, no matter how hard you try. The epoxy "grabs" the surface, and if shot in thin layers to prevent running, builds up beautifully.
The Tile Doc can be tinted to a few pastel shades too, if I remember what I saw on the box.
It's labor intense, but the epoxy is the best way to go.

We have bought a product called Mr. Tubby to do our 75 Overlander which haven't used yet, does anyone have experience with that stuff. It only came in White here but many more in S. Africa where I think it comes from.

I just completed a krylon fusion paint job on the abs/fiberglass areas in my 25ft Tradewind 2 months ago. It looked absolutely beautiful after taking the time to prep and apply several thin coats of paint. However.... Today, I tried to tape a trim piece in place to rivet it in, and the painters tape peeled my paint off. I am completely disgusted and devastated. What should I do now?? How do I get all of this paint off to start over with a different paint?? Help please!!

Ouch. sorry to hear that. All is not lost. You can use a small palm sander attached to a vacuum and get it right. A detail sander works great in the corners. After you get as much off as possible, wipe it all down with laquer thinner. You don't have to drench it, it will dissolve the remaining oils and film that caused the paint to fail. Make sure you have a fan pulling the fumes out. I would not recommend using stripper...toxic goo and may harm the ABS.. GOOD LUCK AND WELCOME!

I would use Industrial Imron 3500 HG.

It is relatively cheap at about $100 a gallon, (a quart would be more than enough), it is extremely durable, and brushable.

Painting issue

[QUOTE=Consuela;1596948]I just completed a krylon fusion paint job on the abs/fiberglass areas in my 25ft Tradewind 2 months ago. Hi Consuela, lets see if I can help you through this,I've got a few trailers in my collection to look at to compare to... a few questions first, can you tell me what year your trailer is I can't see that info on your profile.
And if possible can you post a picture of where it failed.

Some of the models used fiberglass fixtures, it is possible that Krylon Fusion was sprayed on the fiberglass gel coat area that may be what failed.

I did all the yellowing ABS in the bathroom of my '72 Argosy about six years back and it is still holding up awesome and the 5 of us abuse the crap out of it. We use the tub in that one for storage when we are driving in the boonies and I've never had paint scratch off, I've left scuff marks but not had it fail.

In my '69 Safari the lower bath fixtures are ABS but the upper portion, the formed end cap is fiberglass.
In the '63 Tradewind the tub is all fiberglass and the sink appears to be ceramic the upper end caps are the old original Zylatone paint.
The '72 Argosy is all ABS fixtures including the upper end cap.

I am hoping your issue may be just that only a certain area of the bath failed and most will be fine. Let me know what you've got and I'll respond ASAP

It's going to be a joy when you're done! Just think, there are hundreds and maybe thousands of people that wish they had an Airstream to dote over.
