'74 Sovereign cupboard doors

I love my vintage Airstream! My "rolltop" compartment doors are mostly in good condition and operating very well, others are in need of restoration. Some from the ground up, with missing wooden strips, some need new backing and others just need to be installed. Does anyone have experience with this aspect of restoration?

Search this forum for "tambour" and look for posts than mention it. There has been a lot done with these cabinets, from restoring what's there to some very creative replacement alternatives.

We pulled our upper tambour out and replaced with sliding doors out of 1/8" thick birch plywood with aluminum trim, bringing the thickness to 1/4."

We replaced the tambour in the sink cabinet with real wood birch. I bought my new wood tambour from Outwater Plastics, the only place where I could find birch. They have a variety of other tambours. My new tambour is a bit thicker than the original, so I had to cut the fabric backing off the edges where it rides in the track to make it thin enough to fit - I just scored a line about 1/2" in from the edge and ripped it off.

Good luck with your project. Looking through what other people have done will give you a better idea of whether you want to repair or replace.

Do you have some old Tambor you want to get rid of? I need a big section for my entertainment center area. I think new tambor is tied to the price of gold and has about the same cost per ounce.

Our tambour was pretty trashed. I have a few pieces in decent shape, but they're about 9" x 20", with the slats each 9" long. The rest had gotten beaten to a pulp and wasn't worth saving.

Hi Perry;
Well thanks to this forum, I now know the name of this stuff. For now, I am hanging onto what I have to see if I can restore it and get it functioning. I see the next post on the subject has some tho, maybe that can work out for you. There aren't many, if any alternatives, hey? At least in mine, the only straight tambour lines in the cupboard doors is the one under the stove. Good luck Perry! (i'll snoop around and see what prices are here)
