65 26 Overlander Gaucho

I need dimensions to build an original Gaucho. I live in Northern Michigan if there was somebody who would let me come over and take measurements ?

I am in Mid Michigan (lansing) and have a 65 Tradewind.
What dimensions are you looking for?

There isn't much to the original Gaucho, mostly the cushions are sewn together even though they look separate. Wood platform with sliders.

When you say “sliders”, are they Walter of Wabash slides? Our 66 has those. Thanks

Millers , dingo thank you for your offer. i would need to come over and make a sketch, blue print of lengths and type of wood , fasteners, templates etc. I am sure it would take me a day. This would take care of me but a drawing, shared with others, could also help others as some are looking for detailed dimensions to make there own.

Tim, do you only need a drawing of the gaucho from the credenza around the street side curve?
I'm taking a boondock trip to Utah but will be back 1st part of November.
If this is what you need I would not have a problem with making you prints for it. (I enjoy making drawings.)

Gaucho 65 overlander

Dingo ,
I received your message and thank you!
I would need to bring a tape measure over and measure every piece of wood involved in making it. The location of the wood structure in my opinion is necessary to the function of the unit itself. who ever engineered it did a nice job. I would be making a detailed drawing for my self and the next guy. Of course I would have to remove the cushions if not attached very carefully. it could take a little time. I am a fixture builder by trade so this doesn't faze me.

Gaucho 65 Over lander

A question or thought as this Airstream is rather new to me. The 65 Overlander I purchased does not have the twin beds in back. Funny I had a hard time finding the layout of mine on any forum. I did find it and I have the double bed in back. My range ,Cook top, sink and heater are on the entry door side. the fridge , cabinet and closet are on the other side. I really like this layout although it seems rare. I just thought twin beds take up too much space although they save time when you decide to go to bed I guess. When I stopped to look at , 10 years after I caught a glimpse of the back corner of it from the road I had no idea the size, condition or anything. To my surprise it had air, and the double bed layout and was an Over lander 26 ' long. Lucky me I guess. it has good bones but needs interior work , a fridge and a Gaucho to start. I am very excited to have this classic.

RE: 65 26 Overlander Gaucho

Greetings Tim!

Welcome to the world of Vintage Overlander ownership! I have owned my 1964 Overlander since 1995. I am the third owner and it has the more commonly found twin bed floor plan. The twin bed arrangement was likely popular for a number of reasons, but I think that you hit on the primary one -- the beds can remain made up at all times while the double bed has to be folded up to permit easier access to the rear bathroom. You noted the difference in the placement of certain kitchen features on your coach, and that can be indicative of the particular floor plan, but it can also be evidence of the factory in which the trailer was produced as there were often differences between the side on which the kitchen sink was found between California and Ohio -- the bathroom could have differences as well with shower/tub switching sides on some come California trailers when compared to Ohio trailers if I remember correctly.

Your 1965 Overlander was also something of a transitional year. I had some features that were more in common with the 1964 and earlier while it had other features that were more common to the 1966 t0 1968 trailers. It was the first year for the solid entry door with the full-length screen door (replaced the door-within-a-door or prior years), it was also the year that the change was made from jalousie windows beside the entrance door to awning style windows, the Hehr windows were more typical of the earlier 1964 trailers than the Corning tempered glass windows that would be used the next ear.

Just in case you haven't already discovered the Airstream archives, I am including the link to the archived copy of the 1965 Overlander.

Good Luck with your Overlander!!
