Need technical info for ordering electric brake components

Can any of the 1980 caravelle owners help me with what size brake components I have to order? I want to order brakes which have a mechanical handbrake installes as supplied by dexter Dexter Axle - Trailer Axles and Running Gear Components - Brake Kit - LH but I have no idea if they will fit my 1980 caravelle 24.

I will post this question in the brake section aswell.

thx Wiebe

You must determine if your Airstream has 10 or 12 inch brakes.

Look at the backside of the backing plate where it's attached to the spindle of the axle.

You will find a square or round plate, that holds the backing plate in place.

If it's square, it will have 4 holes, for the 10 inch brakes.

If it's round, it will have 5 holes, for the 12 inch brakes.

Just talked to dexter but they cannot confirm if all 1980 airstreams had dexter axles, nor what capacity axles would have been fitted if they are dexters (caravelle is still in transit). The only thing I have is the attached picture. Does that give a clue to anyone?

thx

Dexter did not supply Airstream with axles until about 3 years ago.

All the axles prior to that were made by Henschen.

Andy, so hoe compatible are those axles with Dexter brakes? What would your educated guess be looking at the picture: 10 or 12" brakes? (given your earlier coments I would say 12 as I see a round plate against the backplates). And how about the capacity:5200 or 6000 series dexter? Would either fit over the Spindle?

thx Wiebe

You can use Dexter brakes if you wish.

If the backing plate mounting flange is round, then your Caravel has 12 inch brakes.

You can also install "self adjusting" brakes.
