Wiring in 59 Caravanner

What type of wire was used in this year and model? Since trailer is 60 yrs old should all / any wiring be replaced?

Wiring varies, 12 volt may be automotive, 120 volt will be larger gauge, probably not romex, assuming its original. Splices will probably just twisted together and taped. Does anything work now? Exterior lights for towing, interior plug ins/lights. To rewire requires removing the majority of the interior panels. Once you go that far hard to stop.

Pictures may help (interior). What are your plans? I would suspect you'll have to redo all mechanical systems.

Harold is exactly right. If you are going to remove interior panels, replace all wiring. The insulation is old, connections are iffy at best and there are much better options today. A lot of vintage AS owners go back with VAC for the fridge, microwave, and any other appliances that require 120v. All lights could be 12vdc. We even converted the Humphrey gas lamp to 12vdc. All marine stranded with crimped shrink wrapped connections. Good luck

Thanks for responses. Just going to look at trailer this weekend. Really don’t want a project. Interior pics look pretty good, so hadn’t planned to pull interior walls( “original zolatone” per ad so assume still original wiring). Somethings have been redone by a previous ( now deceased) owner, but won’t know anymore details til we see it in person and talk to current owner whose hasn’t done anything to it

The old wire in my 1955 Safari is marked Paranite T-Flex Non Metallic Sheathed Cable Type NM 14-2 600V.

I am in the process of replacing the old wire with marine grade wire.
