Thumbs up Univolt to Inteli Power Help Wanted

My hard drive crashed and I lost all of my “before” pictures of my 66 Tradewind restoration project. I have replaced my Univolt with an Inteli Power 9100. I had taken pictures of the wiring configuration of the Univolt system and I am now lost on what and where wires need to go. Here lie the questions and the problem I have; before my Univolt was removed all of my 110 volt outlets worked when plugged into shore power. I installed the Inteli Power using 3 wires (red +, blue +, and white -) that go from the Inteli Power to the bus fuse panel. My 12 volts system is working great, but I am left with a black romex wire that comes out of the wall in the lower, rear, curbside (near where the Univolt was). This black romex wire consists of a white round, a black round, and a green flat wire. I am almost positive that this was connected to the Univolt to somehow complete my 110v circuit. How do I hook this up to the Inteli Power? I hope there is a simple solution to this, because I am simple minded when it comes to electrical problems (please use + & - and colors in your description). Thanks in advance.

Bill

They should be the 120v leads, black and white are hot, green is common, or ground (remember, green grass grows on the ground).

If you are getting 120v to the Intellipower, and nothing to the rest of the trailer, you probably need to hook those wires up to the 120v side of the Intellipower, along with the feed wires that are there. It sounds like it was used as a connector to the rest of the trailer.

Bill, I suspect this is not a simple matter. Try reading here: http://www.tompatterson.com/VAC/Arch.../msg00018.html
If yours is similar to the Globetrotter electrics, you will need some specialist advice from one of the forum members who has done this exact job. It's very simple on the more recent trailers. Nick.

Thanks for your replies. Could the three wires be the power source to the Univolt. I can’t remember if the Univolt was direct wired or plugged into an outlet. I did fail to mention that I have the Inteli Power plugged directly into shore power (all of the 12v system works this way). Before I removed the Univolt, when I plugged the 110v feed line into shore power, 110v outlets worked but 12v did not. Now when I plug the 110v feed into shore power none of the outlets work. It has something to do with the three wires I mentioned previously. Got any suggestions. Thanks

66 Tradewind;

Although I can not give you specifics - Hubby will have to do that when he gets home - maybe a PM.

I do know however that when he removed our univolt and replaced with the Intelipower 40amp he determined that the Univolt acted like a receptical outlet - so instead of running direct he had to put in an outlet for the inteli power to plug into and then run from there to the power box. I also remember him saying something that the univolt had it's own fuse system in addition to the fuse panel that was separate from the Univolt. Thus having a separate fused receptical.

Not sure if that make sense to you - but I will pass this on to Peter and he can take pics of his system and send them to you.

His words - it is simple and an easy change once you understand how the old system was set up.

Did you get the charge wizard too - if not we strongly recommend it - it really does keep your battery charged at a consistent level there was a couple of times it went into "overdrive" boost charge to keep up with the demand - no diming lights or worrying if you will toast your battery. A well invested $25.

The Intellipower, or Univolt, should be wired into the trailer through a circuit protection device, either a fuse, or circuit breaker. The breaker panel also supplies 120v to the rest of the outlets. If you are direct wired into the Intellipower from shore power, bypassing the fuse box, that is why you have no 120v in the coach, there is no 120v to supply...

Wire the Intellipower into the breaker panel, or fuse box, and wire shore power back into the fuse box, and all should be well.

clairification

Thanks Terry,

That makes since. If you don't mind for clarification, correct me if I am wrong. I should install an outlet to the fore mentioned black romex (three wires, white+, black+, and green-) that is not hooked up to anything. Plug my Inteli Power into that outlet. Plug in shore power feed from fuse panel to shore. Done?

Thanks
Bill

That pretty well describes what I did with the Caravel. Sounds like you're on the right track.

Yes, that should work fine. Shore power into fuse box, to outlet from fuse box, and wire a plug on the Intellipower lead, and plug it in. If the factory installed smoke doesn't come out, you are in business.

It's working

Thanks to all who chimed in. My 12v and my 120v are working great with no smoke. Now I will hook up my batteries and charge wizard and pray that this works.

Good job Bill! The Charge Wizard is easy, at least on mine it just plugs in with one bolt holding it in place. Can't mess it up. I'm sure you'll have it all working no problem. You already did the hard part!
