RV repair shops around Austin TX

Greetings!
This is my very first post in Airforums. I’ll be taking delivery of my first Airstream, a 2023 Flying Cloud 25RBT, and am planning to have a hardwired electrical management system installed.

Can anyone recommend a repair shop to do the job?

Best regards,
Rey

Welcome to Airforums. I haven’t heard of anyone around Austin that Airstream owners recommend. Paul with A&P Vintage Trailer Works up in Paradise may be worth a call. I know they have a good reputation with the vintage group. I’m sure others will chime in with usable information. Good luck

I second Bubba L's recommendation. I just finished with a major upgrade project for my new 2022 Globetrotter 27fb twin. A&P Vintage Trailer Works executed the project and did a fantastic job.

They also handle all sorts of repairs for new and vintage Airstreams. While my trailer was being worked on, A&P was also working on a repairing an Airstream that had been rear ended in a collision. They restored it to 'as new' condition.

They are a bit of a drive for you, but are worth the trip if your repair needs are more substantial.

Paradise is "a little" far away. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Rey, it might be a bit far to drive but the work will be done right the first time. I had a major project done there last year and can't say enough about the place. Welcome Bubblehead....from a retired P3 type.....

Paradise is not that far. I’ve driven 1200 miles for repairs and modification. I just make a trip out of it.

We have not had great luck with the service at Camper Clinic in Buda. Since we have lots of family down in Houston, we are down there a lot. We live in Round Rock. We have been taking our 2016 FC FBQ to Bob Jones RV Repair,1408 Missouri St, South Houston, TX 77587, 713-910-2949. We have been very, very satisfied with their whole crew. Happy Trails!!

Austin man for repairs

I am on my 2nd Airstream and have used David West in Austin for various repairs (air conditioning/plumbing/electrical) in the last couple of years.

I have had mixed but decidedly negative leaning repairs/maintenance experience with Camper Clinic though I bought both trailers from them.

I don't have any first-hand experience with wiring except trying to hide power cords for wireless speakers - used channeling that best matched the interior fake wood paneling color. When I broke the HDMI cable to the main TV I couldn't find anyone to repair/replace it. The kits to repair the cable ends are beyond my all thumbs capability. So I just switched to a wireless high-def HDMI transmitter from the onboard/in-cabinet HDMI wire manager to the main TV.

Since the trailer is essentially a pier and beam little house I have thought to run cables under the trailer, as with our old house next to which the trailer sits in Central Austin. Wire channeling can hide most of anything but you do have to come up through the floor. In my opinion, that trumps pulling wires through interior aluminum paneling. There is also the possibility of running wires through the air conditioning duct but you still have to pop out somewhere and hide the wire ends.

Please keep us posted on your progress.

If anyone has any experience with under-carriage vacuum systems for a trailer I would love to hear about that too.

Thanks all for being here.

What, exactly, do you mean by a “hardwired electrical management system”…??

Do you mean something ON your Airstream..?? or do you mean a “shore-power” system…? What are you hoping to accomplish?

I have not had good luck with Camper Clinic in Buda for service in the past. Heard they may have gone thru some new management changes, so maybe it's changed? Biggest issue besides quality of service for me was getting reasonable actual estimate on service start date and actual completion date/cost.

No, they haven't. I just recently wrote them off because they don't listen, don't return phone calls, ask over and over for the same list of necessary repairs, and in a variety of ways have proven incompetent and unreliable. I'll never go back there again.

IDitto Gypsydad’s experience. Having done this for a number of years and in a number of different locations finding the right repair facility is quite the accomplishment.
Make the drive, you will not regret it!

Hello Larry,
Might have to do just that if I can’t find a local shop that I like. Thanks for your service on this Veterans Day weekend!

Hello BainPerk,
Thanks for your story. I searched Google Maps for a “David West” that looked like an RV shop but couldn’t find it. Can you provide a little more information?

Hello Boxite,
I’d like to install a unit like the Surge Guard 50amp Surge Protector with Voltage Protection, which is mounted inside of the trailer; instead of an externally mounted surge protector like Progressive Industries EMS-PT50X Portable RV 50-Amp EMS with Surge Protection. I’m looking for additional electrical system protection without risking an external surge protector being stolen.

For sure;

David West (512) 696-3417. He is the 2nd at-home repair guy I have used. I believe they were both steered to me by someone at Camper Clinic.

With the 2nd trailer, I purchased a more robust (expensive) warranty package that paid for at-home repairs. David was completely familiar with that process and got my 2nd replacement Dometic (Chinese for crap) airconditioner at just his installation cost.

He fixed my sizzled power receiver receptacle and my melted cable ends. He sent me the replacement parts needed in an Amazon link so I wouldn't have to pay the much higher replacement parts cost from AirStream.

I believe David is also a Deisel mechanic. He has also told me that he is ex-special forces. He was very able to carry the replacement air-conditioner up onto the roof of my trailer on his own.

Lastly, don't know if it is true, but he told me that he works on Matthew McConaughey's AS trailer (Hook 'em!).

Lastly, he sends an invoice for work done but I typically just pay him right when the always correct work is completed plus a generous tip.

Consider the Hughes Watchdog Bluetooth surge/EMS.

It is made in America and comes in both a cable version and a fixed mount version.

The fixed mount version of the Hughes Watchdog is what I installed in my trailer and it has a replaceable surge module.

The components in a surge protector wear out as they absorb the energy from surge events, so a replaceable surge module is a useful feature.

Also, mounting the surge protector/EMS inside the trailer is the best location for the EMS. You can have 104V at the shore power pedestal that barely meets the EMS trigger threshold and end up with 4v or more additional voltage drop on the 25ft power cable in hot temperatures with air conditioning running.

A trailer mounted EMS will be able to measure the voltage drop on your shore power cable and properly protect your sensitive equipment on the trailer.

David West replaced the fridge under warranty for me a couple times. Took a few to get one that worked. I'd recommend him.
