Rewiring lights on 74 Ambassador

Can anyone advise us about whether to re-wire the lights as is or put in a more updated system?

The hatches above the lights leaked and shorted out the bulbs etc.

We also need a decent wiring diagram--there are some odd electrical issues involving fuses, an after market radio draining the battery, and so forth.

First things first. Fix the leaks. Once that's done, you can move on to the wiring and lights. If you like the lights I would keep them. Otherwise, I'd covert some to fantastic fans (which is what I have in my Airstream), and some to lighting.

A definitive answer to your question is difficult as it is impossible to account for the variables that may have been created by previous owners of your Airstream. The wiring pattern for the seven-pole Bargman connector in 1974 was not the same as the standardized wiring pattern that is utilized on modern tow vehicles. I have attached a pdf file containing the wiring diagram utilized by Airstream for the Bargman connector from 1966-1981. Even this may not be totally accurate as a prior owner of your trailer may have wired in a new umbilical cord with a different color coding scheme. The diagram will at least give you a starting point to troubleshoot the wiring on your trailer's connector.

Good luck with your investigation!

Kevin
