Ethanol= small engine trouble

I wasnít implying ethanol was bad when I asked about recreational fuel. Here in Michigan the only place I can find recreational fuel is Sunoco and itís 94 octane.
I learned the hard way about ethanol in small engines. Had to have a carburetor rebuilt in my log splitter because of it. It seems no-ethanol fuel is becoming more available around here. There are also additives for ethanol to reduce the corrosive effect on small engines.

Ethanol in my cars? Sure, theyíre designed for it. Ethanol in my small engines? No way.

I purchased 2 Honda 2000 gen in 2009 and use them throughout the year. I purchased a new 20í Bambi last year and installed an easy start on the Bambi. I can now run the heat/air heat pump using only 1 Honda 2000. I donít think you can even do that with a Yamaha 2000. One pull and it starts right up. The only trick is to make sure you run the generators at least twice per month and use only ethanol free gas. Love this set up!

I bought iPower generator inverter 2000/1600 at Samís Club for $386, no shipping. Runs great, quite, reliable. Run in parallel for AC. Parallel kit comes standard as well as adapter. I highly recommend it.

I have learned that small engine carbs work a lot better if they never see gasoline w/ alcohol in it. Not sure what the alcohol does to them, even those that say 10% ethanol is OK, but couldn't find any cleaning that helped and finally just replaced them and always used pure gas after that.

Predator generators by Harbor Freight

The problem appears to be the alcohol attracting water, then corroding parts, plus a jelly-like goop that forms in storage and then plugs tiny passages in the carb.

I bought a dual fuel Champion Inverter generator that will never burn gasoline except in a super serious emergency. Iíll deal with the loss of power from running propane by installing a MicroAir EasyStart on the air conditioner.

The Yamaha is the best IMHO! Honda is good too.
You're taking a chance with the Harbor Freight gen.
Spend the extra money and get one that will last!

Remember this adage? You get what you pay for!!

Generator

There are three major factories that produce inventor generator s .Do not hesitate a second bye the Harbor Freight 3500. This is a steal . Get the extended warranty. Run it over throw it in a river no questions asked . They will give you a brand new one . Which you will not need . Excellent investor . Trust me 4 years not one issue. I have used from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm for years .

I've been running 10% ethanol fuel in my Honda 2000 for more than 10 years, without any problem.
The Honda owners manual says: "You may use regular unleaded gasoline containing no more than 10% ethanol (E10) or 5% methanol by volume"

I empty the fuel tank and run the carburetor dry before it is stored for any length of time.

Love my Predator

I've had a Predator 3500 for two years now and I love it. It's the only generator I've ever owned so I can't speak about the other brands, but the Predator has been very reliable, with zero issues. Lot's of power and barely hear it on from the other side of my Sovereign. A 3500w is going to be heavy but I would suggest some sort of a lift system before going through the hassle of multiple units. Just my humble opinion.

I have 2 Champion generators in use. One is 10 years old and gets ran 2 or 3 times a year. I store it with ethanol free gas and Stabil in it. If it's getting ran, I use ethanol gas. The other gen is 3 years old. I use it weekly. I use ethanol gas only. Both I turn the petcock to off and let run dry after each use. Never had a carb related problem.

I am giving the Predator inverter a look, but may go with another Champion.

Predator is good

I like the Predator 3500, but found out that you can't use the 20% discount coupon buying generators.

I found out too. It's in the fine print written on the coupon, so small I had to use a magnifying glass when the store clerk told me.

Does anyone have any experience with the Predator brand, and can you discuss the pros and cons?

Also, I would be interested in whether to purchase the 3,500 watt versions of the Honda or the Predator in order to run an air conditioner, and just leave the generator in the tow vehicle during operation, or to go with two 2,000 watt units, which can be moved around more easily. FYI, I have a bad back....
Thanks!
I looked at the Harbor Freight Predator. I know people who have this generator and it works well. I did not need 3500 watts but I wanted at least 2200 watts running with 2500 watts peak. I purchased a Westinghouse 2500 inverter generator and it is quiet. It will run my Air-conditioner, refrigerator and lights with about 800 watts to spare, for 7+ hours on 1 gallon of gas. I carry it in my tow vehicle and use it when I need to boondock. Westinghouse and Generac generators seem identical in appearance except I have only seen the 2500 model by Westinghouse. I have an Airstream Basecamp.

I went to Harbor Freight and bought a trailer hitch rack which I customized for the front of my Bambi for my generator, two gas jugs and the battery. Really helpful.. OK I canít figure out how to add pictures. :-(
