Perversely, but logically, when power is cut to the detector (such as when your house batteries go dead) the detector will beep and the light will flash in order to warn you that it will not be working for very long.
Is it possible that somehow you lost power to the unit, and the new one needs to be connected for awhile before its internal battery is charged enough to operate? What I am suggesting is that the original power problem is still the cause for the new one's failure.
