Lame is NOT the appropriate word…..GARBAGE is a much better description!!

Your Parallax single stage constant voltage converter is fine for producing 12VDC to satisfy the requirements of the trailer…..things like 12VDC control voltage, power for your lights, water pump, furnace, etc.

It is a HORRIBLE battery charger!!! ALL lead based batteries require a 3 stage controlled charge for optimum charging and maintenance. All lead based batteries have different charge set points but they all need a 3-stage automatic charge for complete charging.

As an example, Lifeline AGM batteries require a bulk charge of 14.2-14.4 VDC, an absorption charge of 14.2-14.4 where the charging amperage tapers as the battery fills and a float charge of 13.2-13.4VDC once it IS fully charged. And all of the above is calculated at 77ºF (25ºC).

These voltage points change inversely with temperature, but you need a temperature compensated charging system like a Magnum inverter
/charger or quality solar charge controller to affect this type of charging.

Your Parallax has a single, continual voltage output of 13.6VDC, which will neither allow for a full and complete charge or a float charge once full…..resulting in the rapid overcharging of your batteries………ANY BATTERIES!!

**All of the move is not applicable to lithium iron phosphate cells.

Replacing your converter is one option. We opted for another - to add a solar battery charger that includes a three stage battery charger. We kept the original Parallax converter and simply make sure the Use/Store switch is in the Store position when we're connected to shore power. If solar isn't in your future then upgrading your converter should be.

My, my ... that's with I love about this hobby. The ability to learn new things. We came out of Class A DP and of course the converter/charger was three stage. Likely we will go the solar route at some point, but for now I suppose we will go this route:

1. Be careful when in "USE" mode when connected to shore power for extended periods of time. Need to mentally calculate how long this is safe based on discharge state.
2. When traveling, I keep in "STORE" mode ... only because I don't want the powered awning accidentally deploying . But if we need to use the fridge, then it is in "USE" mode.
3. The confusing one now is what to do when back in the storage facility. I will not have it in "USE" mode unless recharging quickly.

I guess the safest is to put a deep cycle tender (Deltran Battery Tender Plus) on it during storage. Can I just put this on while the batteries are in place, connected off and isolated with the disconnect switch in "STORE" mode?

Other than this, we love our 2016 Classic and will be taking it on a trip out west for 6 weeks in early February. Already had it in torrential rain in Dallas over t-giving weekend, so I feel pretty good about the leak test!

There may be better ways, but this is how I do it. I am closely following the discussions on upgrading the converter or installing an inverter/charger. My AS is stored inside, so solar won't work to maintain it. I still have the stock group 24 Interstates (but will also be upgrading those in the future).

I'm interested in swapping my charger for a 3 stage.

What model(s) should I be looking for?

I'm familiar with the name "progressive dynamics" because that was what was in my old Class A. However, beyond that........ I'm at a loss of how to select the appropriate unit.

Also, a battery meter is a must.
