I needed a generator for some Desert boondocking I have planned this summer and got tired of waiting for Honda to fix the EU2200i and allow dealers to start selling them again, so I bought the equivalent new model Yamaha EF2200iS. When I got it home, I immediately got buyer’s remorse when I found out that new Yamaha still used the old 79cc engine that was in the EF2000iS which is the same engine design used in most of the budget generators that you can buy for half the price. The new Honda EU2200i has been upgraded to the rugged Honda GXR120 120cc engine that’s been around awhile. The engine in the Honda has 34% more displacement than the Yamaha. Since I will be pushing the limits of my generator by running my 15000 BTU AC on an EasyStart, I don’t want to limit my setup with the smaller Yamaha engine. The Yamaha may be a fine generator but it’s just not the one for me because there is “no replacement for displacement” (unless you have a turbo or supercharger)
About a week after I purchased the Yamaha, I found out that Honda had given dealers the OK to sell the fixed EU2200i, so I called my local Honda shop and asked if they had an EU2200i ready to sell. The salesman said that they had just received 3 recall repair kits from Honda that afternoon and if I came to the shop before closing time they would have an EU2200i ready to go for me. I bought the Honda then returned the Yamaha the next day. Haven’t had a chance to fully test my new EU2200i yet, but I will report back when I have more to share
