migrate 30a twist lock with smart plug

Just be sure to follow wire colors and connect them properly. Mine went in easy, the old one was glued in with tons of hardened caulk that took a lot of work and time to get out from around the hole. And since I didn’t care to save the old one, gratuitous violence and careful use of sharp tools did the job.

Although it seems like a good product, I would be worried that in the case of my cord being damaged, stolen or lost I wouldn't be able to use a standard RV cord until it could be replaced as SmartPlug doesn't appear to have an adapter for the coach end.

I think I’ll wait for The SmartPlug company to make one before I invest in their products.

I’ll just be careful to follow the departure checklist and verify the shore power cable is properly disconnected, coiled neatly, and properly stowed.

IMHO adapting a crappy twist-lock connector to a better one is counterproductive. It’s not gonna solve the basic issue.

Did you get the plastic cover or the metal? We ordered the metal cover, but Amazon sent the plastic one. Now in a debate as to send it back or just use it. It appears that it may have better weather resistance?

As much as I like nice things, there's certainly a part of me that dislikes proprietary things.

Not all twist locks are made the same either, and they are subject to wear and tear. If one is worn out, might just be time for maintenance and replace it rather than wholesale change for something different.

Mine is metal, as ordered from Amazon, IIRC. Was a bit of a struggle getting the plug strain relief over the cable, but it looks like a very water-resistant assembly when completed. They provide a tool to help do it.
I like the stainless steel parts for their corrosion resistance as well. My twist-lock was always a PITA to get connected, and it always felt loose to me. This is really plug-and-play, and latches very solidly.

Yep, mine too... replaced it with the SmartPlug. I have no worries about it being 'non-standard,' I'm confident that If I needed a replacement quickly, SmartPlug's customer service would get me one overnight (I know, I know, there is such a thing as weekends!).

Go with SmartPlug

Agree with rmkrum. When upgrading to 50A service, we installed stainless steel SmartPlug. It is well built, and easy to install. We purchased the B50ASSY 50A Combo Kit, A1001 Weatherproof Cap, and a Voltec 16-00563 50 Amp Right Angle RV Power Supply Cord - 30', all from Amazon.

Installed and in use.

SmartPlug and the cord are listed components.

If replacing an existing twist-lock receptacle, inspect the existing receptacle wiring to make sure the insulation is not hard, brittle, or darkened.

Installation instructions are well presented. Ensure that you trim the outer cable jacket and wire ends to the specified lengths. Use a torque driver to tighten the wires in the receptacle to the specified 20-25 in-lbs. Pushing on the strain relief and cable seal takes some patience, even when using the supplied lubrication.

Can highly recommend using SmartPlug.

For the two SmartPlug receptacles so close together, do you have two separate AC power systems? If not, what type of transfer switch or mechanical interlock do you use?

Two coaxial inputs, one for Sat Tv, other for Cable Tv. There is simply a Smartplug cover over it.

I put the SmartPlug on front and back of my AS. It is great and makes connecting and disconnecting a breeze. I had a problem with my little blue light going out and the company sent me a new cord promptly. Very pleased with this mod.

Until mine fail in some manner I probably will retain the factory cord and plastic connections. What I have done to make them tolerable is to put a light coating of oil on the threads each month. I use BreakFree oil.

https://www.amazon.com/BreakFree-Cle...break+free+oil

This allows me to much more easily screw on the collar and get it tight where there is no play in the attachment. One still has to make sure that they do not cross thread it but it is less likely now that it is easy to thread on.
