Up, in most cases and when done by a professional, is in the ON position. As a person that has been in on wiring a few houses, it really bugs me when they are put in upside down. Is that anal retentive?

"Up is On"

Another example of '...if you want it done right, do it yourself".

Not knowing who worked on the unit in the past it would be very difficult to point fingers, but I agree with flyfshr, why is it so hard to get it right during initial installation or repair?

I travel to South America quite a bit, and it's ALWAYS a guess as to the position of a switch when off and which side of the faucet is Hot or Cold.

Did they put the Hot on Left as in North America, or, because of the Carioles effect south of the equator is it on the right?

Does C mean Cold or Caliente?

H is Hot or Hielo?

Does the water heating system even work?

Maybe things aren't so bad here in the States after all.

But it still bugs me..............Off should be Down.

Down should be off up should be on BUT! I have a couple of 3 way rocker switches soooooo I agree there is a standard but you never know who has been working on something. MY DW got a new washing machine one time because the old one wouldn't work right. Lo and behold the morons that had plumbed the house had the washing machine hookups reversed on the house. Cold on the left and hot on the right It is hard to believe somone could screw something that basic up. Then again we are human and subject to our moments

You could always do what the previous owner did in my trailer...he took a permanent marker and wrote in big black bold letters the words ON and OFF...I guess you need both words just to be sure...GRRRRR. On the switches in my house I simply mark a dot to detect the ON position. Fortunately the PO of my trailer wasn't the PO of my home.

toggle switches

In my MH, my toggles were all up and OFF, and that bugged me so much that while I was trying to figure out a fuse problem under the dash, I turned those bums around and now they are all down and OFF. Unfortunately, since I didn't have the proper tool to loosen the tightening nuts, I used pliers and scratched them all up. Will have to replace them later. But now they are in proper alignment!
