Many airstreams have fiber optic telltales that enable the driver to see if the trailer tail and brake lights are functioning. Because they work by transmitting an image of the glowing bulb filament, they become unusuable when the lights are converted to l.e.d.s since there is nothing for the end of the fiber-optic to "see". Now comes the 10mm super bright white l.e.d! A very tidy fix can be accomplished in the following manner that will make the telltales functional with the solid state tail light conversion:
Looking at the accompanying pics. note that: The 10mm l.e.d. will fit in the grommet where the oringinal lens for the fiber optic was, but facing into the fiber. So...
Drill a hole in the end of the l.e.d. to receive the end of the fiber-optic cable and put the l.e.d. in the grommet facing the front of the trailer. Wire it to the supply for the light and use an approprate (470 ohm) dropping resistor. Put the fiber end into the hole you drilled and push the boot over the grommet to retain the fiber. Voila! The best of both worlds
