Help finding an adapter
Hi there, we recently got a 1974 Landyacht Sovereign.
We took it out for it’s maiden voyage, but ran into an issue when it came time to hook up to shore power. The plug on our trailer didn’t match the 30 amp cord I bought. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a bit of information on what you likely have: https://www.etrailer.com/question-383523.html

Unless you’re determined to keep it ‘original’, I would replace the receptacle with the modern version.

We've upgraded to a smart plug which you might consider since you need to replace anyway. Google "Smart Plug RV"

+1 on the Smart Plug. Much sturdier connection.

Hi
If you go the SmartPlug route, keep in mind that they are quite expensive compared to the "normal" connector. You will spend that money on the trailer end, on the cord to go to it, and again on any adapters you happen to need. We have one on the van and thus more than a bit of empirical data on this .....

I really like the SmartPlug, especially compared to the fickle threaded Twistlock we had on our last trailer (I could never get it to thread correctly on the first try), but man, even the simple 30-amp to 15-amp shorty adapter was over $150. I hope it means that all the employees involved in production are getting a strong wage and benefits.

After looking into the SmartPlug. I am interested in going down this path. However, I do have some reservations.
The current plug that's in the AS is round and has 3 screws and the SmartPlug is square and has 4 screws. If I get this and start the process, how can I ensure the screws anchor properly? Also, is the wiring in my '74 going to be the same? i.e. have black (hot), white (neutral), and green (ground) wires?

Hi
Anything you replace that original plug with is going to involve a bit of metal work. None of the alternatives will be ideal for the hole you already have.
Wire wise, yes, they all use the same three wires that go to the existing plug.

All the 30 amp ones use the same 3 wires.
Don't get the 50 amp version (unless completely rewiring for 50 amp) it has 4 wires 2 hot, 1 neutral and 1 ground. Also 50 amp requires heavier wire needed to prevent fire burning up your trailer.

Count me as another fan of the smart plug, I converted my trailer over to that about a year ago. Yes, it is a pricey/expensive change, but the peace of mind is well worth it to me. I have seen several 30A RV power cords with very clear indication of arcing/burning on one contact pin, and I don't want any part of that. Campground electrical can be shaky as it is, I want my side to be as good as I can get it. I ordered my conversion parts as complete kits, they came with the RV side and the cord side as a mated pair, and I needed 2 kits (my trailer has 2 power connection points). I used second cord side plug with a 12awg/20A style cord, for times when a 30A feed is not available. Also no use for 2 of the 30A cords.
