Group 27 Battery Swap

My 24’s are dead, I’d like to upgrade to 27’s and it looks like they will fit but not sure. I have a stock 2015 Flying Cloud Bunkhouse, anybody do this? Does it fit? Buying them in a hour!

Batteries are stock lead acid Interstates.

Thank you!

Whoa! I have read over the years that some have done this, others have had to modify the battery box. . I would not upsize unless I knew for a certainty that the 27's would fit. Measure your box in all 3 dimensions and measure the 27's you want to buy. Don't rely on hearsay for this.

^x2 and when measuring it is often the opening that is the limit and not the box size so consider you might be able to get the first one in but not the second.

Not sure if the 2015 has the taller battery box, but I went with 2x6v golf cart batteries. I had to remove the crappy plastic tray in the bottom of the battery box, but they fit.
Good luck!

I do not have a trailer that new. I do use group 27 batteries in the standard box of the time. Height is the problem and mine fit fine. You could go to tractor supply or an auto parts store and have them install them. That way you would find out if they fit without a couple of trips back and forth. The 27's are heavier and harder to install.

Hi, I just did this, best decision ever. Group 27 AGM batteries replaced Interstate 24's. 2019 AS 25FB. If your battery box is the same size as mine, I only had to trim a bit of plastic off one battery only, the piece on the side of one end that holds the strap. Increased my TV viewing on battery only from a 1/2 hour to hours, 4 at least. Hope this helps.

That is a puzzle to me. You get 20-25% more capacity going from 24's to 27's, maybe 20 more amp-hours. You should have plenty of capacity to watch TV from Group 24's. I'd much rather have AGM's than upsizing to wet cell 27's.

I agree, that's why I went with AGM's, the increase in amp hours is significant with AGM 27's

Maybe old, fried 24s to new 27s? That could produce quite an improvement!

What is the amp hour difference between group 27 AGM batteries and group 27 flooded cell batteries?

I forget which model year it was exactly but Airstream did alter the size of the factory battery box to accommodate group 27 batteries. My 2017 has the larger box and group 27 fit nicely within.

Actually that is a hard question to answer because there are so many different kinds of wet cell batteries, fewer AGM's. Basically it is about the same, or can be about the same if you compare apples-to-apples, that is, deep cycle type batteries.
My comment was really meant to say, if money were the object I would rather have Group 24 AGM's than Group 27 wet cell. But if you can fit 27's, then Group 27 AGM's would be my preference. Moot for me, since I went to Lithium's a few years ago.

So to answer the question, they donít fit without some mods to that strap holding plastic. So I went with 24s. Before long we will upgrade, probably to more than 27s. Thanks for the replies.

Duracell group 27 AGM replaces Interstate group 24 in 2018 International 27FBQ. I had to remove lid to get them in but once they are in just 3 rivets on the lid hinge and install complete. All done in the stock battery box.....

Generally a Wet Cell group 27 will have roughly the same nominal charge capacity as an AGM group 27 at about 100-115 Ahr. since you can safely discharge an AGM 10-20% more that makes the AGM quite a bit better, at a cost......

They fit a 2006 Classic. Just be carful and don't let the positive posts touch the aluminum door frame while inserting. Shield it with a piece of nonconducting material.

Not sure OP has the doors or the tongue box, but group 29s shoehorn into the door models. Barely.
Interstates, that is.

Battery box was made deeper by Airstream prior to 2017. I installed AGM Group 27 last year without trouble on my 2017 28 foot. They are oriented side to side versus front to back with the Group 24. No trimming of the plastic but I had to remove the tie down rod to get in. Enough room to reinstall the tie down once the batteries were in. The tie down rod was tight from grime/some corrosion. I have added 2 nuts (tighten against each other) to the tie down so I can use a wrench to assist in unscrewing and reinstalling.
As noted earlier measure to see if you have the deeper box.
