Generators

I’m looking to buy a Honda generator, 3000-3500, preferably with electric start. Apparently Honda has pulled all their generators out of California until they can be reworked to be compliant with new emissions laws. I’d be happy with a gently used one… Anyone have one they want to sell?

(No political comments, please…)

I found my Honda EU3000is on Craig's list.
The seller had all the original paperwork and it had only 7 hours on ethanol free gas. I saved a bunch.
It does take patience, but the deals are out there.

I just sold my Champion 3400 Dual Fuel model last year, and it had electric start. Worked great for 3 years I owned it. Reason I sold was I wanted the lighter Honda 2200 propane model from Genconnex; half the wight; had Champion offered the 2500 DualFuel model, I would have purchased instead of the Honda, but it was not out yet. Honda is nice, but so is Champion. Price/convenience/reliability of the Champion is pretty compelling....many folks here still use. Amazon can ship to you.

There is a newer model on sale for $1007; Champion 4500 with electric start.

I have the Champion 4500 remote start. It’s fantastic. I paid quite a bit less than $1,000 for it though.

Honda generators are difficult to find anywhere right now, not just California.

I purchased my Honda 2200 with propane modification from Genconex directly; came with a 3 year warranty, and is certified dealer from Honda. Think it was around $1300-$1400 with shipping and tax little over a year ago, with 10' hose and connects directly to your AS. If your looking for propane that is...

How about a Predator 3500 Watt Super Quiet Inverter generator at Harbor Freight ... $899... Consumer Reports gave a very favorable rating to several models of their generators. I've purchased 3 of their small engines and they have been very reliable (and amazingly quiet). My next generator will be a Predator..

Predator may be ok, but relying upon CR to tell you that might be a bad idea.

CR is not what it used to be.

You might be correct about CR but my experiences with Predator engines have been positive. Their prices are very competitive, and Harbor Freight's warranty is outstanding.

Just to be clear, the standard warranty that comes with a Harbor Freight generator is all of 90 days. What you are referring to, I think, is the extra cost warranty.

@Silvr_Bullet-

Give what a “break or brake”? That CR isn’t what it used to be?

There aren’t many got to places for unbiased reviews, and it’s for its membership benefit. They are only beholding to the membership, not the manufacturer of products. They’re a nonprofit. Just my opinion.

Both .. The standard warranty and extra warranty. If it's defective, return it for a new one. No hassle return/exchange. But I think that Predator products are a great value for the money and the quality may be second to Honda but not to any great degree. Which will last longer, possibly the Honda but for the price you can buy 2 new Predator generators and save yourself $300 or $400. They (2 Predators), are better than 1 Honda any day ... And some Chinese products are well made ...

Echoing comments about Champion. I cross shopped Honda, Yamaha, Predator, and Champion and ultimately the 4650 remote start won out.

Approximately same price as Predator 3500 but
-greater starting and running watts
-built-in remote start
-can be paralleled for 50A service (vs 30A with Predator)

I've had mine a year and its still running great.

IMO - the remote start in particular is an early-morning coffee game changer and is not offered as standard by either Honda or Predator. Tractor supply offers an equivalent extended warranty to HF.

Check out Brian Mages' post regarding Champion, but especially the "follow up" video about the larger 4650 (I believe) which the video maker purchased... Can't offer advice about Champion, but I can tell you what my experiences have been with Predator products as well as my experiences with Harbor Freight.

What about the ASF reports (Airstream Forum actual users)?? Seems to have been pretty good to me over the past 15 years I have been reading owners inputs here!

People who have the Predator, seem happy; as do people here who have the Champion, Yamaha, or Honda.. I think we all agree that "noise" is the main concern for off brand generators...maybe fuel (propane vs gas) is number 2 and of course, cost. Have not seen any negative posts here on reliability over the years...they all seem to hold up fine. Have seen concerns on effects of altitude on some models, but minor tuning or replacement jets can fix. I did a spread sheet few years ago when I bought my Champion Dual Fuel, with the noise/weight/cost analysis including Honda and Yamaha. Champion 3400 was one decibel louder at the time on paper. I loved the fact no need to carry gas anymore and could either use the 20lb propane bottle, or plug into my AS QD. My main concern is noise; I walked around in Glacier Park to see the noise level at 25' distance; the noise of my Champion vs the neighbor with the Yamaha or the Honda...the Champion was a bit different frequency, and seemed a bit louder, but the DB's rating on my phone registered as mfg. advertised; Yamaha model was quieter at the time.

Honda EU2000i 1600-2000w 47lbs 59dbs $999.00
Yamaha EF2000i 1600-2000w 44lbs 51.5dbs $989.00
Champion Dual Fuel 3400 3400W 95lbs 59dbs $1,053.00
Predator (Harbor Freight) 3500 3500 W 99lbs 57dbs $699.99
Briggs & Straton P2200 1700-2200w 55lbs 59dbs $632.78
Honda EU3000is 2600-3000W 134lbs 49-58dbs $2,472.00

Now they all have newer models, many with the propane option...noise level is my biggest concern when I am at the campground...I still will ask my neighbors if my generator is too noisy, haven't had anyone say yes yet. I try to point the noise away from neighbors for sure in any case.
