Can I keep existing electrical???
Hi,
SO my 1969 Overlander's electrical is in working condition and original. It has the UNIVOLT system. I just bought a new 24 deep cycle battery, and have some (not all) wires exposed. From what I can see they appear to still be in good condition. I am not planing to remove all the skins (only where there appeared to be water concerns/leaks). Can I keep this wiring? I do not plan to add additional A/C outlets or appliances. I do think I might add 2-4 more places with D/C wiring for lights, ubs connections, and a new fan(tastic).
Eventually I would like to boon-dock with an inverter generator as my source...
Any help or recommendations would be appreciated!!!
This is all so new to me!
Thanks

Replace the Univolt with a modern multi stage converter. The Univolt will damage your battery by overcharging it. I am a big fan of the converters from Progressive Dynamics and have had them in my last 2 Airstreams.

Ok thanks! So, with this new converter, would I still need an inverter? Still don't understand the differences with these 2 items.
Thanks!

An inverter produces a limited amount of 120 volt 60 cycle (Hertz) power from 12 volt batteries. Takes a rather large amount of current from the batteries to deliver modest amounts of power to small 120 volt appliances. I carry a Champion 3400 watt (engine driven) inverter generator that runs on propane. I only need it to run air conditioning without hookups on the road.

You don't have to replace your wiring if it is all working properly. You can check insulation and continuity on every wire without dismantling the trailer with just a multi-meter, if you want to be sure. I left my original wiring in place, as there was nothing wrong with it, and I had no need to move outlets, add gizmos, etc.
good luck!

The converter takes in 120 volt AC power from shore (or generator) and outputs 12 VDC to charge your batteries supply power to your 12v loads.
Converter = AC --> DC
An inverter takes 12 VDC power from your batteries and makes 120 VAC power for household appliances like TV, outlets, etc...
Inverter = DC --> AC
It is possible to purchase a combination unit (an inverter/charger) that does both functions (not simultaneously). However, those are more commonly found on boats that have multiple battery banks.
