Battery exploded

On my 2003 Classic I've always left it pugged in inside my shop. Last fall I had one battery explode. Am I doing the right thing leaving it plugged up?

With an '03 w/ the original converter, probably not. You'd be able to get away with it for a while if you check the water levels regularly, etc, but the older converters aren't great at "float" maintenance of batteries, it's not exactly what they were designed for.

Batteries also are not eternal... how old was the battery that popped? Were the batteries a matched pair? (different battery condition can cause uneven charging of one battery in a pair, for example.)

My trailer has a "Zamp" power inlet next to the batteries, so I set up a connector for a dedicated smart battery maintainer and I leave THAT plugged in, not the whole trailer. So far, so good.

Welcome Aboard 👍

OEM 74 Series Parallax Converter? 👎.....NOPE 😳
First major 'upgrade' we did was getting rid of that battery burner...😂

My coach is plugged in 24/7/365 except when in tow. Never had a battery problem.
With the right converter it should not be a problem.

Many people have swapped their single stage Parallax charger/converter to the PD 4655 three stage charger, which will charge your battery to a certain (appropriate) level and then float (trickle charge) to avoid overcharging. Talk to Randy at Best Converter. There are several threads on doing this yourself.

Happy trails,

Mike

As one that has solar and parks in the open, I never bother plugging her in. She's always topped off and ready to go. And the solar chargers are almost all full featureed with great battery maintenance strategies.

I know this doesn't help you for your storage situation. Still need to check batts annually to make sure they have sufficient water to help them last longer.
