Battery compartment...How to?

The black vinyl battery holder, I'll call it a nest, in my newly acquired '73 Tradewind is attached to the
compartment door. The lip of the nest is snuggled under flanges A and B (see pic) and also held in place by the 2 nuts on the handle screws. Flange A is a moulded part of the door. Flange B is a seperate strip which appears to be held in place by the same 11 rivets that attach the piano hinge.
I need to detach the nest it but I am stumped. The door won't close if the battery just sits loose in the compartment. There must have been a rhyme or reason for this configuration but I'm getting a bald spot from scratching my head. Has anyone encountered this? Help, please?

Possibly my non-educated guess would just be to accomadate slightly batetteries if need be

Thanks, resolved the problem before the forum crash thanks to input. Battery was too big, bought a smaller one. Duh.

I just bought a Trojan 30XHS, (130 AH) and it fits in there fine. I suppose you could set an additional battery on the door nest and wire them in parallel while stationary. Sometimes the cables bunch up in front of the battery and that prevents the door from closing properly.

I'll Second what Pick mentions about the "battery cables bunching up in front of the door"--this is something to watch out for. It's happened to me numerous times and causes the door to pop open unexpectedly.

At one time I measured and was fairly sure that two Optima Blue Tops would fit perpendicular to the intended battery orientation if the platform was removed from the door and a proper method of securing them was fashioned so they didn't fall out when the door was opened.

(I did not do this because of concern over extra weight on the outrigger and it's location behind the axles.)
