Batteries run dead with shore power
Hi friends.
2018 33ft Classic - Camping for the weekend connected to shore power and coach batteries keep discharging and are now nearly dead. They do charge up from my TV when I drive. Any tricks I am missing. (No tripped circuits.)
Thanks a million.

Hi
Best bet is that either the converter charger is broke ( it ...err ... does happen ....) or that the breaker that feeds the charger has tripped. Either way it's something that an AS dealer should look into.

Remember to reset an 120v AC power breaker, you must turn it fully to the 'off' position, THEN turn it back to 'on'.
This resets the breaker properly. Just pushing the handle back to 'on' does not reset the breaker.
Yep, it sure sounds like no 120 volt power into the converter, or a dead converter...

Thanks for the info. Checked breakers again. All seem to be in ON position.

Do you have two shore power connections?
Does anyone know if AS has upgraded the transfer switches?
Could be a TF switch failure.

It may seem to be on, but I would totally reset it---switch it off then back on. Circuit breakers can shut off but the handle appears to be on. A lot of times if you run your fingers along the outside of the switch, you can feel it isn't exactly in the right position. A total reset could fix it. I would still have AS look at it.

Okay. I’ll ask the obvious. Is the battery disconnect switch turned on? A few items are wired directly to the battery and will drain it...usually in more than just a weekend though. With the 2018 converter, the battery disconnect can be left on so that the batteries will charge (but not overcharge) while connected to shore power.

Hi
A lot depends on how that specific trailer is wired. Some have the converter on one side of the disconnect, others have it on the other side of the disconnect. There are indeed examples of the same make / model / year / floor plan from the same month being wired differently. No idea if it was a mistake ( wire bolted to wrong post ), something done by the dealer ( = customer request maybe), or a running change.

I’m just going off of how a 2018 is SUPPOSED to be wired. Recall that in 2018 Airstream switched to a multistage converter/charger and an entirely different type of battery disconnect switch/system from previous model years to solve some of the problems understanding exactly what happens when the disconnect is on or off and to prevent overcharging of the batteries.

Hi
They still have the latching relay for the use/store stuff. Put the charge cable on one lug and it disconnects from the battery. Put it on the other lug and it never comes off the battery no matter which way the relay is latched.

Yup. Exactly right. Had to reconnect my solar controller because I managed to mix up the terminals when we installed it.
