Anti-Solar Panels may solve some issues

Stumbled across this on another site I frequent. Mostly theoretical, but non the less, most things developed from necessity show up based on needs/wants.

Since houses are into solar, I can only imagine RVs right behind it.

Enjoy

Hmmm, Mercury....haven't we been trying to get that out of products for decades. Like mercury vapor lights and mercury switches in cars, for example?

Hm. Solar panels do not operate from the heat of the sun. They use the light, and heat rise actually makes them less efficient. I’m not totally convinced this is a serious article...or that the author has much of a clue.

Anti solar is real. They are making great strides in the advancement of solar energy. I have heard talk inside the industry that they have developed a panel not much bigger that a deck of cards that is rated at 100watts.

Interesting idea. I had not heard about anti-solar until now but the theory makes sense.

In my days as a mechanical engineer in the electronics industry we made use of the fact that outdoor electrical equipment would radiate its heat to the much cooler temperature of "space." So it's not a stretch to take this principle of radiation cooling and turn it into anti-solar panels.

Just as solar panels need to be exposed to direct sunlight, these anti-solar panels will need to be in direct view of deep space. That is, overcast skies, shade from trees, etc. will block the view of space and will therefore limit the power that can be generated.

We’ll see if it’s real or just early conjecture.

It’s straight out of science fiction like many other things we take for granted.

To me, the writing seemed a bit fishy.

In kittmaster's post, click on the link and then, in that page, click on the "paper" link. You will see that the original paper is genuine and is published by the American Chemical Society in its ACS Photonics journal.

FAKE SCIENCE

it's easy to fool people that don't have a deep understanding of science and the scientific method

many schemes play fast and loose with facts, leave out inconvenient points
this like others fails on many ground including :

- law of conservation of energy and
- balancing the energy equations

if this worked, why not develop energy from the heat from your body or the heat off the street or roof. its not like people haven't tried this before

beware of false promises

I don't think anyone is trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.....

If it pans out, great, everyone wins, if not.......meh.....just another half baked idea........

You know.......like the many others that we use every day today.......

Not everything pans out....but I thought it would be a "fun" discussion.....apparently I was wrong.

Not SOLAR. It is based on a heat engine. And I am not about to sacrifice room on my roof that is used for Solar for something that produces at best 1/4 the amount of electricity. Dumb idea. BTW, may as well invest in the Minto wheel, as it too is a heat engine. lol

Think of the temperature rise our RVs experience during the day. That's quite a bit of mass that's 5, 10, 15, 20 degrees hotter than the ambient temperature and orders of magnitude hotter than deep space. So when the sun goes down and that "heat" can radiate to space - presto, power can be generated. This idea is potentially useful to large buildings, parking lots, etc. and perhaps someday our RVs. Maybe even people walking around with heat engine shirts! Who knows? If Henry Ford had asked people what they wanted back in the early 1900's they would have responded "faster horses!"

Will this be a viable product next year or even 5 - 10 years? Likely not. Will it be made to work in some form or fashion? Maybe, perhaps yes. Is it an interesting idea? I quite think so. It was not that long ago that solar panels as we know them were a novelty and only those on the bleeding edge of early adopters were using them.

Look at the reference below. The term "anti-solar" is confusing. This has nothing to do with solar. The effect has been known for years, and is the converse of the Peltier effect that is behind the thermo-electric coolers found in those 12 volt plug in lunch (or beer) coolers. Whether it can be developed to provide useful amounts of power remains to be seen, but this is not unlike the solar cells that were a curiosity when I was MUCH younger.

I think they are simplifying it since most have no idea what a heat engine is nor the Peltier effect.

Most DO know what solar means......and Anti-(Anything).....I think it's more meant to get the point across for those that aren't familiar with the sciences around the principles described.

As mentioned, it may be where we end up in the not so far future, not necessarily today.

Maybe a better name would be 'Space' panels, "where no 'man' has gone before"...and the temp variations are greater.
