Amp Requirement

I've recently seen campsites that are labeled with 20 amps, 30 amps, or 50 amps. How much power does an AS require, assuming A/C is needed?

I'm a complete novice to camping and I hope to get a AS in the not too distant future.

30 amp plug if you have one AC unit, a 50 amp if there's two. You can't run the AC or heat pump on 20 amp but everything else should be OK. Campgrounds try to accommodate everyone, even campers who may not have any adapters but need to plug in for laptops, mattress inflators, etc.

You can get adapters (dog bones) to fit your house plug or convert a 50 amp to a 30 amp. Some of the 30 amp plugs are in bad shape at some locations so we use a 50 to 30 adapter and plug into the 50 amp.

And usually (but not always) if the campground has 30amps there will also be a 20amp in the box; if it's 50amps they will also have 30amp and 20amp

Thank you! How many amps will the electrical system in a AS be able to handle? For example, if a 50 amp campsite was the only one available would it be OK to use it even if you only need 30 amps?

Sure. Your AS wouldn't actually be using 50amps. You'll just need one of the adapters (dog bones) that lets you plug your 30amp cord into the 50amp outlet. You can also get an adapter that lets you plug into a 20amp circuit, but in that case you would need to be careful with what you use (no air conditioning or heat pump).
