61 Bambi Battery

I have just got into my restoration and have realized there seems to be no way to charge the small battery without hooking up to the car. Has anyone attempted to install a more modern converter charger in one of these units? How about installing a battery box on the tongue that is capable of carrying a larger, deep cycle battery?
