50AMP cord extension

All,

We are planning on installing a 50AMP outlet at our home. The issue is the location of the outlet will be about 80-90 feet away from our parking spot. Is it Ok to daisychain multiple 50AMP cords to reach the outlet??

Thanks

Understanding there are many reasons why a power line cant be properly trenched in to support a RV Service outlet closer to the parking lot. Just be sure they are the right reasons. Before investing in the daisy chain, consult with the licensed electrician who will be installing the 50 Amp outlet at the house, maybe even get a quote for a trenched line out to the parking lot.

So if you decide to proceed ahead with the daisy chain plan, use electrical tape to seal the connections from water. Some will also recommend that the connections be elevated off the ground. Depending on the quality, size and length of the daisy chained cords, you may experience voltage drop, which will reduce the amount of power available to run everything in the trailer.

Protect the cord from mowers, mark with survey flags or something. Do not place the cord across the driveway where it will be run over. Inspect regularly for damage, varmints will eat the insulation off.

Todd, I think it depends on what you plan to do with the trailer on your parking spot. Are you just looking to power up the fridge before a trip / keep your batteries charged? Or, are you planning to use all 50A of the service (both A/C units at the same time)?

You could get by with 30A of service which would be less expensive given the cost of copper wire today. I agree with DonRich7878’s suggestion of going the buried cable route to put a pedestal next to your trailer. You can use a 30-50A dog bone adapter to connect your trailer. As Don mentioned, there’s voltage drop over longer runs plus potential for added resistance at each connection. An electrician will take the distance into account when running an underground line.

We’re lucky that our trailer is on a pad next to our garage; I just use a 15A outside receptacle and regular extension cord to a Camco 15A-50A adapter to power the trailer before a trip.

Good luck!

DonRich 7878 nailed it!
I'm a believer in burying wire in PVC conduit, and a weatherproof box.
You could run underground for 50' and use your own cable for the rest, but it will be much more efficient and painless to put the box next to the trailer and purchase a 10' 50 amp cord.

It seems that every connection point adds a possible failure/problem point. If I were going to be doing this very occasionally I might do like you're suggesting and use a few extensions connected together, but not for something long term. For that I'd either do like suggested and install a proper outlet nearer to the trailer, or at the least have a proper cord made in the length you need. Buy a length of 6 ga cord rated for outdoor use and have the proper ends installed so you have one continuous shore cord running the entire way. No worries about lose connections or water infiltration at the connection points that way.
